Discovered this by accident in a old fashioned book store and love it. OK so the humour is a bit naff but this guy seriously knows what he is talking about and how to put it on paper so that the only thing on your mind after reading a chapter is reaching for the camera to put it into practice.

Quick tips that can really help improve the pictures that you take with whatever equipment you have to hand without blinding you with science.

Please, don't take any notice of the tripe you will read in these reviews about stupid humour. It is only in a half dozen intro pages and even then, it's not enough to worry about and stop you learning from these wonderful books.
Buy this book, buy volume one too and a good highlighter pen, because you will learn an awful lot (unless you are a seasoned pro). The tips are quick, precise and have made my photography much better in the week it has taken me to read (and cover in highlighter!) both volumes.
Volume two has a great section on studio work with simple and inexpensive equipment that is worth the cover price alone. Don't listen to the silly moans about his sense of humour, buy these and learn lots!

i was looking for a book to help with my photo composition and was recommended this, so perhaps i was expecting something a little 'less formal'

for me, its quite formal and concentrates on design aspects rather than composition itself in which i would think of things such as framing subjects etc, but perhaps i was just expecting more along the lines of "rules of thirds", "bottom heavy images" etc.

with that said, its a good book for ppl who have already familiarity with general composition rules.

The book is written it a folksy, readable style with lots of anecdotes and will be pleasant reading for non-technical people. Unfortunately once you dig beneath the exterior there's nothing much there.

It covers the creative aspects of aperture and shutter speed, which you can find out online easily. Most explanations are better than Peterson's. It gives you some rules of thumb for manual metering, which are mildly useful but wildly out of date for digital photography; he never mentions exposing to the right, nor even histograms. Postprocessing, which changes the way you can think about exposure, barely gets a mention except to be dismissed as too much work. His explanation of how a camera meters and what kind of situations it handles will ... Read More:

This is exactly what I was looking for, a book which taught me the basics then applied them to different situations. I feel a lot more confident playing around with the settings on my camera and my photography has improved as a result. I like the way he has taken a photograph for each subject and then explained the settings on the right hand side. After reading the first two chapters I was able to cover up the settings, look at the photograph and predict what he had used. In no time at all I was grasping the logic and gaining confidence. A lovely book for beginners. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I also like the fact that he has explained commonly made errors in composition and lighting and illustrated the flawed results on the same page. I am starting to think about ... Read More:

I enjoyed this book immensely. It is very tempting to describe the book by what it is not, not autobiography, not a companion to "Sorry I haven't a clue", not about Jazz... Though I think anyone with an interest in these areas will enjoy it.
The book is quite literally a collection of rambling thoughts and reminiscences - which does not sound very appealing. But Humphs love of language and music shine though continually, and it flows along in a delightful manner.
While his achievements in Jazz and Comedy are well known, Humph's journalism successes are perhaps less well known - and in my opinion his abilities as a writer are every bit as great, and that shines from the pages of this book. I really think anyone with a sense of humour will like it - a smile on every page! ... Read More:

I think I must need a 'Total Idiot's Guide' as this was not what I thought it would be.
Being a complete beginner with dSLR, I thought this book would be a step-by-step guide on 'How To....' I was a bit wide of the mark - although the book says a lot about why you should do this over that, etc it left me lost on how to actually do it. So I'm using my camera on Auto until my Nikon book arrives. Let's hope I'll have more success with that one.
