Good book. Covers a lot of ground and gives a good survey of the field. Time is on its back, however. The use of web frameworks such as Struts or Spring, and the use of ORM tools such as Hibernate or JPA makes much of the book "redundant". Such tools although solving a lot of practical problems, also introduces many new ones. Maybe a new edition of the book should cover such ground.

I am working in C++ since last couple of years and I purchased this book few months back. I found this book very useful as it contains most of the do's and don'ts in C++. This book does not waste any time in making you the basics understand it just directly hits the target by talking about how you can make your program more efficient. So a prior good knowledge of C++ is must for this book. I recommend that this book is for every C++ programmer as it will tell you the things that you should not be doing and explains why also so it does not leaves you wondering why I should not be doing this way. On top of all this book is written in a very simple way so its very easy to understand.

This book supposes that you're familiar with excel or have used it before. I have used excel, and wanted this book so i could refresh my knowledge. I wanted a book that assumed i was a complete novice, but this is not that type of book. It's also not that easy to follow. Would recommend only if you have basic excel only.

THIS IS CLEARLY NOT A BOOK FOR BEGINNERS,HOWEVER IF YOUR ALREADY HAVE A SOLID UNDERSTANDING OF PHOTOSHOP CS THEN I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK,IT WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY ENLARGE YOUR CREATIVE ABILITY.ITS FILLED WITH IDEAS.

In contrast to the other reviewers, I found this the most dull and badly written computer book I have ever read. It can never have been proof-read. It is full of careless errors - there are even some in the answers to the questions. The book leaves gaps in your understanding all over the place, and doesn't flow. The aim seems to be learning by committing disjointed facts to memory, rather than imparting understanding. This is not a dull subject if it is taught by enthusiasts, but the authors of this book do not seem to have the spark of life within them. I give it one star for the included CDs, and for giving an idea of what's expected in the exam.

A excellent book for those of us that aren't too familar with this computer lark.Very easy to read with great see-how guides.Lovely coloured pages that invite you to get involved,yet without bogging you down with too much information.I gave this book 5 stars although it doesn't cover some of 'vista ultimate' functions,but hey if you are man enough to handle the ultimate(like myself)then this book will serve you well,plain and simple.

Great book.Learnt a lot about how to develop applications in Excel.Would not recommend it to beginners though.

I have not programmed for more years than I care to remember and for various reasons wanted to get into Java. I bought this book thinking it would give a stronger theoretical understanding than many of the other books around. I like to understand why I am doing things, but that is not a strenght of this book. It spends a long time explaining very basic stuff (fair enough on an introductory book, and easy to skim over), but then in later sections skims over things with barely a mention as to what is going on. Bottom lin is this is just another 'cookbook' type of tutorial: Here is an example, repeat it and it will work for you. No real explanations. Sections on Swing very poor indeed. Given that Swing is supposed to support multi-platform it would also be nice ... Read More:
