This book is a real breath of fresh air in the piles of standard IS and IT textbooks. The first question: is it a textbook or not? The authors have achieved a very difficult balance between professional book and textbook - professionals will find it useful, as will students (and I'm tempted to replace the word 'useful' by 'essential'.

The book is a breath of fresh air because it discusses and takes forward, a whole series of essential debates about the rapidly emerging uses of information in what many people proclaim as a new information age.

The Amazon listing gives access to the contents so look there for the book's scope. In my opinion, this book is bordering on the essential reading for everyone concerned with information, ... Read More:

Excellent book, written by two of the most prolific contributors on the Oracle Apex forums - they've helped me out many a time.

The book has taken a long time to make it to print, but is worth the wait; whilst there are plenty of on-line resources to get you started with Apex, this book takes you through the next steps in depth. It is really well written and easy to read, with clear and useful example code throughout.

If you use, or are looking into using Apex, then this book is a must.

What a book, helped me pass the CCENT exam within 4 weeks. I had some knowledge of networks, but the book is set out so simply and had good descriptions. I would recommend this to anyone wishing to take the CCENT or CCNA exam.

Strongly recommended! This book will show you how to use the incredible 'out of the box' capabilities of Sharepoint to make web sites to structure and display information without programming. This book is NOT about programming web parts or components - in fact you don't need to be a programmer at all.

The book is very well written and gives STRUCTURED ADVICE on where to start, and how to choose between the many options. It is NOT just a useless duplication of the Help screens you already have, like some books. It covers small business right up to big enterprises where I am working. I now UNDERSTAND things instead of just guessing.

I can now create simple solutions with Sharepoint, Excel and Infopath in minutes or hours that ... Read More:

the book refers to project builder rather than xcode. admits xcode was on the way when it was written, but says 'these instructions should work fine'. They didn't for me - the output from the first program never appears on screen. I've been googling for answers to this, and discovered the Apple documentation for xcode which I'll now have to study first.
Admittedly it does give instructions for compiling from terminal or windows if you prefer.

I'd advise people to ignore the negative reviews for the following reasons:

1) People now talk about specific refactorings so, like design patterns, you need to know the names.
2) It was never supposed to teach you good design. If you want to learn that there are good books out there (including by Craig Larman and Robert C. Martin).
3) Some of it is basic but you can ignore that stuff if you want to, and when your doing some of the more complicated refactorings they could well be useful.
4) As Martin Fowler points out you don't need to read it cover to cover, in fact he advises you use it as a reference.

What this does teach you is how to iteratively improve bad code, something every developer needs to be able ... Read More:

This books index (9th ed) is all over the place, utterly useless. It's a good book but extremely annoying not being able to find anything. Pearsons are also non-existent when it comes to replying to the customer about this unbelievably silly error...
My advice is to wait until the service pack release comes out or if you need to, buy the previous ed.
