I am working in C++ since last couple of years and I purchased this book few months back. I found this book very useful as it contains most of the do's and don'ts in C++. This book does not waste any time in making you the basics understand it just directly hits the target by talking about how you can make your program more efficient. So a prior good knowledge of C++ is must for this book.
I recommend that this book is for every C++ programmer as it will tell you the things that you should not be doing and explains why also so it does not leaves you wondering why I should not be doing this way. On top of all this book is written in a very simple way so its very easy to understand.

I work with WPF on a daily basis and used this book to get up to speed from pretty much nothing. It provides a good grounding in all aspects of WPF, gives more advanced information that you can note and come back to later, and serves as a good desktop reference while coding. The level is good for someone familiar with C#, the tone is professional and the writing style is pleasant to read and flowing.

Highly recommended.

Packt sent me a copy of "Learning jQuery" by Jonathan Chaffer and Karl Swedberg. jQuery is a javascript library that I have been using on and off and was delighted to be given a chance to review this book and have a chance to read through and learn about jQuery in a less urgent manner than I had initially.

With a tag-line of "Better Interaction Design and Web Development with Simple JavaScript Techniques" and some 376 pages long (split into 10 chapters, along with three appendices) the book excels at fulfilling that promise.

From the chapter on Getting Started through selectors (css, dom, xpath), Chaffer and Swedberg examine and show how to use jQuery for animations, ajax and manipulating tables to the all important client ... Read More:

I am a serious photographer with many years experience of using Photoshop and have a keen interest in the merging of art and photography. So the title and description sounded just the thing. But I have to say I was disappointed. The book is well written with lots of how-to examples but much of the content relates to "way out" creations more appropriate to the work of illustrators than photographers. So if you want to create images of people with segmented heads, design comics or cartoons, make your mother-in-law look 30 years older or produce weird and fanciful art - then this may be just for you. On the other hand if you live a little closer to the real world - be warned!

I have to say that I'm suprised at one reviewer saying that it was confusing. Not at any point did I find it confusing. This book is a very very good example of how to write reusable bulletproof code. Obviously the code supplied from the website,as with ALL coding books, is not quite the same as the written examples, but hey! the point is that YOU write the code, not cut and paste. And yes he does point to others websites as examples of how they can be improved with DECENT code, bloody right, there's far too many people still writing sloppy xhtml and css, with sites that belong in the dark ages.Get with it! and get some standards.

this book can be vague in places, although if your looking for the basics this is still a good one, I had problems with the support files.. certain ones seem to be corrupt on the disk and I couldn't open them, that doesn't really help when your trying to learn this from a beginners point of view, this package is complex enough without things being made more difficoult.

Scrum is a simple emperical process of project management. There are few rules and these are adequately explained in a few pages and within the appendix of this book. So what, you might ask, is the rest of the book taken up with.

Well there's lots of case studies to demonstrate the practical use of Scrum in different scenarios. I must admit to having found these case studies a little uninteresting at times and a bit repetitive, however by the end of the book I feel I probably appreciated their purpose more than I did whilst reading them.

In terms of whether the book is worth owning, I found it well enough written and in general quite useful, however I do feel the meat of the subject can be summed up in far fewer pages and I'm split between the ... Read More:
