I was lucky enough to be given this as a birthday gift when I first got into my Family Tree. It is a really useful resource helping a beginner find their way around the wealth of info available on the web to the amateur genealogist. There is info on where to start and on the whole aray of online sources. A great book, worth the money.

I recently attended a two-day course on Adobe Photoshop CS3 as part of my conversion to digital photography and digital imaging. At the end of that course the students were all given a copy of this book which contains a training CD Rom. As I was already booked onto the "advanced course" in 14 days time, I eagerly put the CD into my computer to practise what I had learned. Only then did I discover the CD would not work without my having first purchased and installed the full Adobe Photoshop CS3 software. In my case, I had already ordered that software so it was only a matter of a few days delay before I could get started. I think I must need a 'Total Idiot's Guide' as this was not what I thought it would be. Being a complete beginner with dSLR, I thought this book would be a step-by-step guide on 'How To....' I was a bit wide of the mark - although the book says a lot about why you should do this over that, etc it left me lost on how to actually do it. So I'm using my camera on Auto until my Nikon book arrives. Let's hope I'll have more success with that one.

I received it as a gift from my wife and she considered it due to many 5 stars reviews here. It is very clear and detailed as many reviewers said, but it bores you if you have fair amount of experience using computers! I mean how many times do I need to hear: ...click at the end of the line, press enter (return), write and press enter, now you are at the next line,...? And therefore it is 450 pages!! But again it is a very good book if you are a novice user just want to build your first web site and make it shine using CSS. * I still haven't finished the book, there is a little chance that I change my mind later.

This book is a really good 'hands on' way of teaching the Java programming language. Whilst other texts may start introducing concepts they often do so in a very bland fashion with chunks of paragraphs often tailored to the academic study of Java. This book however introduces and teaches the reader how to program in java, explaining the important concepts clearly and concisely and offers numerous practical exercises.

I am kind of surprised that so many people have given this 5 stars. I don't think this book is very good and here are my reasons. 1- The book is written in a style that some people may not like, although this was not a problem for me. What did annoy me was the way they wrote the code bit by bit over many pages filled with a lot of people and pizzas in between. It means you can never use it as a quick reference as you have to search for the final correct piece of code. 2- There are no full code examples. Yes everything presented is in fragments, you will never see a complete piece of programme. 3- It uses Java, which looks like C# to all intents and purposes.
