Patricia Wentworth (1878-1961) was a very prolific and very competent detective fiction practitioner. A slightly older contemporary of Agatha Christie, she brought out an elderly spinster detective sleuth, Maud Silver, a short time before the latter created Jane Marple. Both writers utilized a common formula: create a character whom everybody hates, have that character murdered in some ingenious way, then follow the investigations to the surpise ending. Dialogue forms most of the content (in order to mask the killer's identity) and most of the clumsy investigative spade work is done by unimaginative members of the police force.

"Latter End", published in 1947, is a typical example. Indeed, it uses the formula in its most basic ... Read More:

Books : Practical Criticism - A Study of Literary Judgment
Practical criticsm is possibly the best book on poetry criticsm ever written (the only book I know of that draws comparison with it is Ezra Pound's ABC of Reading, and even that falls short).

Anyone wishing to know something about poetry should read this book.

Asimov has an easy style, is clearly highly intelligent and achieved fantastic things during his lifetime. It seemed strange to me, therefore, why he found it necessary to take every opportunity to trumpet his achievements; surely they speak for themselves? Is he insecure?
That was one very disturbing element when reading the book. The other was his attitude towards his son and his first wife. Although he doesn't hide his feelings towards them, they are nonetheless to be deplored. There seemed to be a embarrassing lack of generosity towards them. So, an easy enough read, but my admiration of Asimov was seriously undermined by the end of the book.

The style of this book surpasses anything that Mr. Bradshaw has written. In other words, although his other books are nice, his writing style is not fluent. He must have had help perhaps, but this one flows fluently. The quality of the material is earth shattering. Very few books have I read from cover to cover within a week and this one I did. This is something I can go over and over.

I love Anne of Green Gables and thought this book would be just as good.

Emily is a spoilt brat. She seems to think, along with everyone else at New moon farm, that being a Murrey means you are better than everybody else. She is always feeling sorry for herself. the way she goes on about aunt Elizabeth, who is really a big softie, is very annoying. Her teacher had a perfect right to tell her off when she was writing poetry instead of doing her maths, and yet she goes on about how mean she is.

She only become friends with people who are either clever, determind, or pretty, most people don't seem good enough for herto be with according to the book.

If you need a book about grammar or literary agents then this isn't it. It is a book purely about releasing creative energy through the medium of writing.

Personally, I found the book exciting to read. I was burning up with enthusiasm to get at the word processor and I actually followed the concrete advice he gives. All I can say is that it worked for me: I had not written before and I have now.

Surely the most important thing for a writer is to write and be passionate about writing? If there is a better way to say what you want to say then be a filmaker or a painter or a critic.
