This is a fabulous and inspirational book for any creative embroiderer and even those who find the idea of creating a sketchbook somewhat intimidating. It shows those of us who love to stitch but are hopeless at drawing how to set about research and design for a piece of work. It covers a wide range of materials and media including sketching, collage, mark-making and use of computer programs. The book is beautifully illustrated with detailed photos of the work and designs of a number of different textile artists including Julia Caprara, Maggie Grey and the author, Kay Greenlees. Highly recommended!

I bought this book in my last year of college and although i have been a professional fashion designer for years now i still believe this to be a bible for anyone in the clothing industry. Not only will it inform of the tips and techniques used in couture, The book will also inspire you to gain more knowledge in bespoke/couture and as result your own work and designs will florish, Trully brilliant well done Mrs Shaeffer. I must finish with a warning though, This book is not for beginners and will only confuse those who are starting out. As the saying goes learn to walk before learning to run this book is for those who can run and have been working in the fashion industry or at home for some years.

This is an excellent source of UK Planning Law and Practice for, in particular, overseas students who have no prior knowledge of the UK Planning system. This applies to those from countries like New Zealand and australia who have their planning systems originating from the UK, as the UK has its own distinctive system unlike the land use zoning patterns of New Zealand the US. It is quite a substantial book however all chapters are useful and cover subjcts from Development Control to Urban Regeneration. It is a must-read before you arrive in the UK or begin practice.

I was so exhilarated by Collings' Channel 4 mini-series "This is civilisation" that I had to search the web to find something similar in book form. I didn't, but came across This is modern art, with its amazon.co.uk collection of high ratings, which convinced me to take the plunge. I don't know, this may be a personal issue, but I think I can generally appreciate good writting, even when it's not to my taste. This book, however, I found confusedly written, with no flow and no inspiration. As I say, it may be just me, or it may be that Collings comes across better on tv. Nonetheless, I thought it healthy to add my view as a healthcheck on the total.

As I work best with pictures rather than words. I love graphic design books packed with large images full of inspiration. This has images, but not enough- plenty of writing tho! (hahaha) Guess its good for contextual studies though.

There are tons of books about various painting techniques out there, but it's surprising how few books about the basics of learning to draw there are. The ability to draw realistically is the bedrock from which an artist should build, and BB has produced a work here that could take you from a fumbling amateur to an accomplished artist (IF and only if you are willing to put a lot of time in). What I like about BB is: He is himself a very talented artist (witness his own excellent imitations of various artists to illustrate their different techniques) but is happy to spend time teaching the rest of us He uses only his own drawings throughout the text His books are actually enjoyable to read of themselves, even if you don't ... In truth there's little to choose between them. Much will come down to personal preference regarding the layout of the two books, and so if you can get the chance to compare them before you buy, all the better. This is a great little book. Yes it does largely apply to film, but it doesn't take much know-how to translate the info into digital setting. The camera just takes the picture, after all, and it's the person behind the eyepiece who makes the image. Lee Frost gives very good advice, and this book is well worth the money. Highly recommended.

One of the best things to out of the website and these books for me is the feeling that you're not alone. It makes you realise that although you feel like you're the only person who feels the way you do you're really not. I was so comforted by reading this book. I read it in about 15 minutes, I just couldn't put it down. The only bad thing about it is that it ends. I could have just gone on reading more secrets.
