Like Belinda Jones' previous and following books, I loved every minute. What I don't understand is why people think the characters and plot are unbelievable and how conceited Belinda is for naming a character after herself...Hmmm...could it be that this is autobiographical?? Well I never...

I don't have a donkey, so I cannot comment upon the accuracies of Mr. Merrifield's observations, but like so many people, I am fascinated by them.

The book is written largely in the present tense, and Merrifield uses the experience of an extended walking excusion with a donkey (aka philosopher for hire: Gribouille) as a stem from which assorted autobiographical and literary musings (all donkey related, however tenuously) sprout.

It's a stream of consciousness style that at first I found somewhat overblown and possibly a little pretentious, but, as I continued to read, I found myself becoming more and more involved and interested in the slow, meditative atmosphere that the book creates.

These maps are really useful when walking. I took this map on a Duke of Edinburgh expedition in the Peak District and it didn't stop raining. The other two maps we took fell apart, even in "waterproof" cases, but this map was brilliant and shows no signs of wear and tear.

A very, very good map of Venice, with lots on it. In fact, perhaps, too much. You have to read this map in advance of your trip - become adept at finding a grid reference for a restaurant, for example, or a "sight" if that's what you are on your way to see.
Good:
- the public transport routes are right, though not very obvious from the map, but there's an official "venice transport" map on the back.
- even the traghetto routes are right(a gondola ferry - E0.50 this year, 2008)
- "road" names are clear and easy to read, if you've got the right glasses on... you reach an age.....
- many reasonable restaurants/bars marked, but coded by cost, which means there are 20 or so entries marked as B on the map, the grid is crucial ... Read More:

I have just returned from a tour of southern Ireland and I used this atlas with no problems at all. It has a full page map of Ireland inside the front cover and then four pages to show more detailed areas before the pages detailing final 3.2 inches to the mile maps. On the inside of the rear cover are distances between major towns in both kilometres and miles and a full index of town. Local attractions are marked and described and there are street plans of a number of the major towns and cities.
Great value!

(4.5 stars) When John Steinbeck obeys a life-long urge to drive from coast to coast in 1960, he little anticipates the variety of the "American experience." Beginning in Maine and traveling along the northern states through Wisconsin, the Badlands, Montana, and all places in between, to Washington and Oregon, Steinbeck then decides to visit his childhood community of Salinas, in northern California. After meeting with friends there, though many have died, he then drives southward through the length of California and then eastward through the southwest desert to Texas, Louisiana, and eventually up to Virginia before returning to New York.

Carrying the reader along with him as he reconstructs this journey for publication in 1962, Steinbeck observes ... Read More:
