I love this book! I absolutely love it, although the key to these sorts of guides is "take it with a pich of salt", that is read the descriptions of the areas, see what it has to offer but then leg it there and have a look by yourself. Info on schools, council tax, local stats, restaurants and parks etc are included, but this book is generally great for getting a feeling and a bit of history of the area. I found it quite thruthful. New edition has added more places (such as Kingston on Thames) but I admit it is still not a complete bible...

A good map of the city, it covers most of the area and is very detailed and pretty accurate as far as we could tell. The one downside we found was that it is a bit big for unfolding in the street. Especially given that one of the favourite pastimes of the locals is to direct you in the wrong direction after bombarding you with the questions of 'where you want' 'what you look for' etc etc. Overall though, very comprehensive and useful.

The Michelin maps are excellent. They are extremely detailed with a scale of 1 inch = 3.16 miles. With motorway exits and entrances for example, it's clearly marked in which directions they operate. It includes useful information like toll roads, petrol stations and even speed radar locations. I also like the insider information. Panoramic lookouts and scenic routes are all clearly indicated (the other regional maps that I considered didn't have this). However do be aware that unlike the broader regional Michelin maps, there are no indications of which towns and villages are of interest to tourists. We have done several walks in the book and have enjoyed them all. The instructions are clear (and updates are posted on the website), and all the information you need is in there. There are great tips on where to have lunch and this often turns into the real highlight of any walk (that long awaited glass of cider on a hot summer's day in the garden of a country pub) ... If you like walking and exploring the glorious English countryside, this is the book you need to inspire you and take you away from the London smog!
