This is an excellent book for degree-level students. It has varied themes and materials and good authentic listening material. Its strength is in language manipulation exercises rather than 'straight' grammar exercises, but this is why it is suitable only for degree-level. The level of language used and expected is very high, and all grammar notes are in French. It deals well with register and advanced structures. It has interesting sections on the press, the Internet, translating and interpreting, young people's attitudes, humour, women's rights, and applying for a job. As an advanced learner of French, I found this book very useful. I particularly enjoyed the thoughtful emphasis on identifying (and rectifying) errors of grammar consistently made by English speakers when learning French. Unlike other reviewers, I found the range of texts used to be varied and interesting - I went on to discover the stories of Prevert from reading extracts in this book. The analysis provided for each text is thorough and cross referenced throughout. It is truly hard to make this kind of book intersting, especially if you are reading them on your own but I think this is one of the best out there and I am a sad enough person to have read quite a few!

This book is great - benefits include - both AS and A2 in one book - MODERN! bright and colourful - clear layout - helpful contents overview (it notes the aspects of communication, grammar and exam skills contained withing each topic area) - clearly presented grammar points within each topic area - separate section containing texts offering the possibility of further extended work I made the mistake of ordering the 1994 original version first -don't bother! It is predominantly black and white and although the content is much the same, it looks very dull. In my view, this book is the best introductory textbook to the fascinating fields of Phonetics and Phonology currently available. As a mature undergraduate studying Linguistics, with no A Level English Language under my belt, I had no prior knowledge of the areas this book covers, and as such was disadvantaged in comparison to the other students who had done the A Level. However I soon found, with the aid of this worthy publication, that the playing field had been levelled. This is not to say that this was the only book at this level that I read. In fact, I have at least four others in my collection. Why this one stands out is because of its clear and informative style, understandable examples, and sensible, logical layout. Read More:

This is simply the best book to introduce phonetics that I have read. Recommended by my university tutor, this book explains everything in an easy to understand, simple way and then progresses to more advanced levels. Plenty of illustrative diagrams, you do not have to be a linguistics/phonetics student ot expert to enjoy this as it is written in a style that all can comprehend. 5 stars and well deserved!!!!!
