I am currently doing my finals and this book was recommended by our university as the best around. I couldn't possibly disagree more. Many of us are in total agreement that it is overcomplicated and difficult to use in pretty much every sense. The index is useless, I'll give you an example...was looking today to revise the use of lequel/lesquels etc so went to the page given and it was a short section on their use in questions. To find the actual section you had to turn to relative pronouns - something that anybody starting out would not have the first idea about. Better grammar books would deal with any topic all at once rather than having one section on page 5 and the other on 205. Can't disagree that the book is exhaustive, but it is ... Read More:

I'm a native French speaker and I bought this book to use as teaching material in private tuition.

This is the next step up after Usborne First Hundred Words in French and Everyday Words in French. The slightly less childish style, the very busy scenes featuring 30 to 40 words, the wealth of basic vocabulary make it a very useful tool for learners of a wide range of ages (though most of the central characters remain children).

All the labels and titles are written in French only, which is good as it encourages learners to associate French words directly with objects, people or concepts without the distraction of an English translation. In case of any doubt a full glossary is provided at the end of the book. It includes an ... Read More:

I bought this because it's an Open University set book, but I needn't have bothered. Although it is excellent, it's no better than the grammar book I already owned.

Moreover, my tutor has only referred me to a specific section once in the first five months of this eight-month course. Even then, the relevant information was easy to find in my other grammar book.

The one advantage I can see for this book is its size. It would fit easily in a day-bag or large pocket when travelling.

I commented on a previous review, then realised I hadn't reviewed this myself, despite giving 5 stars to both the Advanced course and 4 to the Foundation course. The reason I forgot was that I DID look over this BEFORE I used the Advanced course, having bought them together, and this being shorter. Wait, in my opinion. This Language Builder is where Thomas goes over many useful and common words and phrases VERY quickly, so there's a lot in the 2 hours. Using the booklet helps a lot, as you can read what you're hearing and visualise it.

A problem I'm seeing in some reviews is that some seem to have missed the Advanced course, which does cover past and future tenses very well. The lack of emphasis on 'tu' against 'vous' is due to the ... Read More:

This book held all the vocabulary I needed for A level, but :

Since moving to France, I have found that the content is very outmoded, or plain wrong. Expressions are out of context, or mistranslated, and it can't be relied up on if you plan to use French in the real world.

I bought this book whilst living in a French speaking country and working at a European Union institution, for both of which knowledge of French was essential. I was instantly impressed with its quality, and its no nonsense approach to French. Far from more "all round" courses which aim to make learning pleasant, this book presupposes a level of interest and commitment that means there are no pictures or cultural notes. Just the language itself.

The book has a common format. A brief and direct introduction to the verb tense being explored, followed by LOTS of example exercises, where our knowledge of the verb tense just taught is tested to destruction point. All of the major tenses are covered, including rarer tenses that only tend to crop ... Read More:
