the CDs are definately needed to go with the book, I have ripped the CDs into mp3s, so that I can transport them around in my Iriver HP140, it saves me taking the CDs with me...

only one tip, you must keep at the language to learn it, 2 hours 2 or 3 times a week, every week...and you will soon get a good grasp of it.

Spannish by Micheal Thomas is a good set of CDs too..

Books : Teach Yourself Instant Spanish Book/CD Pack (Teach Yourself Instant Courses)
This product is fine. It's easy to follow, well produced, well structured and the book and its accompanying CD are user friendly.

My big 'but' here is that it's a bit fast in places. For example, it immediately starts with a lengthy dialogue in Spanish which, although broken down later, might put off the absolute beginner. If you really are a total beginner with no background in learning languages (e.g. getting used to verbs) then this product should perhaps wait and be maybe the third or fourth 'beginners' product that you acquire and work on.

I would still recommend getting it as it has hundreds of words of useful vocabulary, is pleasant listening and you will surely benefit from it - but if you use a few more introductory ... Read More:

Beware: This is the book only!
The book and course is good, but a lot of exercises need to be done with the cd's. And the support book has all transcripts of the listening exercises and answers.
It's just not complete if you only have the book...

17.Michel Thomas Method: Spanish Vocabulary Course (Michel Thomas Series) by: Rose Lee Hayden

Books : Michel Thomas Method: Spanish Vocabulary Course (Michel Thomas Series)
I've been a huge fan of Michel Thomas for years and would recommend any of his CD audio courses to anyone wanting to learn Spanish, Italian, French or German.
Were Michel alive today however, I wonder what he would make of this latest batch of language products - I mean the Vocabulary Courses - which bear his name.
Take the Spanish for example. With regard to the content I find little with which to quibble - although the endless repetition (like a mantra) of Michel's name becomes increasingly annoying as the course progresses. Indeed the inclusion in the course of two native speakers (one Castillian, the other Latin American) is a welcome and wholly positive aspect.
The problem is Rose Lee Hayden who presents the whole thing. On the ... Read More:

18.Teach Yourself Spanish Starter Kit (TY Starter Kits) by: Elisabeth Smith

Books : Teach Yourself Spanish Starter Kit (TY Starter Kits)
In my opinion this is the best introduction to spanish i could have hoped for. I have never studied spanish before so I was daunted. I read through some online info about it and it seemed liked it was going to be quite hard. This kit really put my worries to rest.

A tip, the coursebook in this pack is intended to be listened to almost always when you are studying, so that you can talk aloud with the dialogues in the book by hearing how the words are pronounced. There's always encouragement from the 'tutor' on the cd. Also, unlike nearly every textbook i have come across for self tuition, it takes a different approach to teaching. The lessons are set out into days. 7 days in a week, 7 weeks in the course. Typically you learn 5 new words a ... Read More:

As an absolute beginner of Spanish, I was attracted by this book when I saw its no nonsense approach and useful phrases. Unlike most other books, which merely focus on "holiday" or "business" language, in this book you find the useful everyday Spanish.

I bought this book without the CD and it shows you how to do the pronunciation so that was not a problem. I am two and a half months into the course now and cannot wait to finish because I know I will have a really good standard of Spanish to continue.

Everything is explained with examples, so if the explanation is a bit too long-winded it doesn't matter.

I really like this format. I have looked at very, very many different teaching aids to Spanish, (and bought a few too) and I do think that this is the best one. The format makes good use of colour and variety. There are listening, writing and speaking exercises. It does not ignore the grammar, but explains grammatical points succinctly. The CDs are essential to you progressing on the course. I genuinely think that you can make progress by yourself using this format. Its exceptionally well thought out and executed.
