71.Michel Thomas Foundation Review Course: Spanish (Michel Thomas Series) by: Michel Thomas

Books : Michel Thomas Foundation Review Course: Spanish (Michel Thomas Series)

There is no new material here, and there is no teaching either. This is basically an exam which tests you to see if you have learned the content of the 8 hour Spanish course (sold separately). What you hear is Michel speaking words or sentences in English, a short pause, and then he speaks it to you again in Spanish. Everything is lifted directly from the 8 hour Spanish course and edited onto 2 CDs; no new recording was done for this. Some of the editing is a bit abrupt, but perfectly fine. If you have not done the 8 hour Spanish course, this may not be of much use to you. This will be useful however, for those who have completed the Spanish course and wish to quickly review the material.

Books : Spanish (Teach Yourself Languages) Accompanies Book

I have bought two other language books in the 'teach yourself' line and this is BY FAR the worst.

I have been learning frantically for the last 10 weeks (i got offered a job in spain) using a variety of books, tapes, one-on-one tutorage and this book/cd set. Compared to all the other things I have tried this book is horribly structured. You are introduced to things without a clear understanding of it, the recordings aren't great as the speakers often don't pronounce the lines exactly as they are written in the book and, for me at least, they speak to fast for a beginner.

Maybe it would work for you if have experience already, but for someone with no spanish skills at all (like myself) I would seriously avoid this ... Read More:

Books : Beginner's Spanish Book/CD Pack (Teach Yourself Languages)
This product is fine. It has 21 chapters in the book (all with different themes) and an accompanying CD which is clear, well presented and well structured.

Don't bother getting the book or CD on their own. They go hand-in-hand, so splash out the few extra quid and do it properly.

I hammered out listening to this while driving in the car to work over a period of 3 weeks or so (about 50 minutes per day each time) and it made a big difference to my understanding of Beginners Spanish.

Note that this isn't quite a 'hand-holding' product. It does go quite fast in certain places, so you'll need to get used to the idea of hearing something over and over again.

I'm trying out other products now (as ... Read More:

Bought the book and are using it in my spanish class that i am attending due to having a spanish women. It's a faily straight forward book and seem to be ok for this purpose in getting to know a new language. The cons is that is comes to cassetes. Yak. I think the authors need to re think their strategy. Why don't convert the tape to MP3, then when you have bought the book, then you can get the speaking people on the tapes afterwards.

This is an extremely well-structured language cassette. It introduces the first-time student to every aspect of the language, and features interactive dialogues, grammer-building and vocabulary sections. There is a 250 page book to accompany the 4 cassettes. The best feature of the course is that it builds up your confidence level gradually and then allows you to test your progress with a variety of exercises - I found my progress was very rapid and I have really enjoyed taking this course. Buy it!

Books : Collins Spanish Phrase Book and Dictionary (Collins Language Packs)
This is a lovely, handy little phrase book, ideal for taking on holiday. It fits into a pocket or handbag, and is reasonably robust. It's quick and easy to use, with clearly labelled chapters on all of the important issues that arise during a foreign trip, including hotels, travel, business, helath problems, emergencies, and shopping, along with general vocab such as numbers, greetings, asking directions, telling the time and so on. Besides that, there's a massive section on food including information about local specialities, and a menu translator. The second half of the book is an english-spanish, and spanish-english dictionary, and even a brief guide to grammar. Everything has an easy to understand pronunciation beneath it, which is really useful. There are ... Read More:
