Hang on a minute. An interesting story, well written, multiple themes, an absence of naval gazing; how did this book ever win the Booker prize? To start with the book doesn't concern itself with how hard it is growing up in some underdeveloped hell-hole such as Kenya, Sri Lanka or Ireland; it isn't concerned with "long-buried relationship issues" such as recent Booker-winning snorefest "The Gathering". Instead it is part Flashman style satire on the Brits in India, part philosophical (God, culture, science) peppered with occasional flashes of Magnus Mills style dark humour. If you want to read an engaging historical novel and a Booker prize winner you will actually finish then this is the book for you.

I found this book very disappointing. The plot started off very slow and in my opinion it continued in the same vein. Usually when I read crime novels the pace is a lot quicker and you feel part of the story e.g. the inspector interviewing at the police station.

To my mind there were too many characters in the book, and I found that the story was getting slower by the minute.

I have other Ruth Rendell books I have read - Road Rage - Great - End in Tears - Great.

I'm araid I cannot add any more to my review - a shame because Ruth Rendell is a good writer.

It took just over 24 hours for me to read this brilliant book from start to finish. I've already ordered Shopaholic & Baby, and can't wait to receive it and start devouring that one too!

Back to this book: it has everything, laughter, tears, arguments and plenty of drama!

Can't recommend highly enough!

I agree with the other reviews. This is certainly not up to his standard. The first one I have not enjoyed. Usually Lee Child's books are excellent.

I'd always enjoyed being read and later reading myself the Just So Stories. With children of my own I started them on these stories and having a cd of them means we can enjoy them on the move. The joy of hearing Jonnie Morris' super animal voice characterisations just adds to the enjoyment - takes me back to watching Animal Magic - deep joy!
Four year old daughter enjoys listening to the stories but my nine year old son has become a great fan - this now regularly is on his cd player in his room.
Buy this and you'll all be able to listen together and enjoy.

That I came to the novel fully aware of the storyline (through numerous TV and film adaptations) and still raced through the novel is an indication of the quality of the story and its characters.
What did surprise me, which having subsequently watched David Lean's adaptation may be down to selective memory, was what an awful individual Pip became during the course of the novel.
I would also have preferred Dickens originally conceived ending to the novel which appears much more in keeping with the general tone than the revised ending.

This novel tells a very powerful story and should be required reading for anyone who has dealings with growing children. Given the nature of the story - a teenager's killing rampage following years of bullying, it was never going to have a happy ending. Long after I'd finished reading, I found the horror of it wouldn't leave my mind - I can't remember when I was so affected by a novel. Jodi Picoult was brave to tackle this very controversial issue, but once again she's pulled-off a remarkable feat. Strongly recommended reading.

I've read quite a few books of Murakami (Kafka on Shore, after the quake, birthday stories and of course the Wind-up bird) and I consider him to be one of the best novelists out there(along with Paul Auster and Philip Roth). He has an amazing ability to narrate surreal situations in the most natural way, as if these things are happening here and now. He is also a master of bringing feelings and thoughts that we have well-buried inside us to the surface in just a few lines. Kafka is a brilliant example. Each and every word he uses is carefully chosen so as to make the novel like a very tightly woven web. Yet this is done in a seemingly effortless way that the reader (at least I! ) finds refreshing.
Having said this, I have to say that the Wind-up bird left ... Read More:

This is the first shopaholic book I have read and, after several indepth novels, it was such a great light relief! It is funny and relatable and just perfect for those moments when your brain isn't quite tuned in and you just need to relax! Although not completely alike- anybody who has read and loved Bridget Jones would definitley enjoy this!

Chinua Achebe's acclaimed novel starts out as a thoughtful invocation of the culture and values of the Igbo people in pre-colonial Nigeria at a time when advice is sought from oracles and medicine-men, justice despatched through blood feuds and human sacrifice, and where the manly virtues of the warrior remain the defining quality sought by all self-respecting men. Embarrassed by his weak father Okonkwo sets out to be become a clan leader through steely determination, hard work and plain bullying. A lot of good it does him, though. A fatal accident - not in any way his fault - results in flight from his clan and a humiliating seven year exile. On his return, the missionaries had arrived in his village and we all know what happened next: the end of civilisation as they ... Read More:
