I really enjoyed this latest effort from a former master storyteller. Jeffrey is back on fire. He obviously had plenty of time to think about this novel while in court and in prison and it shows. It is a well crafted and the plot races along. We get plenty of insight into British upper classes and law courts which are described better (and more realistically) than the East End characters. Not arty but very entertaining.

Don't get me wrong; this is a great read. The atmosphere created by the author really makes you feel as though you're stuck in a Tudor monastery in the middle of a blizzard yourself....and you feel as though you need to continue with the book because of this.
Sadly I feel that it's over long and drawn out. 420 pages could have been trimmed down easily without losing any of the main plot.
One other thing....I found it difficult to follow the plot when all of the main suspects are called Brother something.

Much too long and boring.
Too much discription and very little action.
I will not be reading any more of her books.

A fantastic read! I've recommended it everyone I know, and have now starting reading the rest of Patrick Gale's books. Rough Music is also excellent.

It is perhaps appropriate that this was the first book I read after the election of America's first black President. My real reason for re-reading it, however, was for the purposes of comparison with Faulkner's "Intruder in the Dust", which deals with a similar theme. Indeed, I recently came across an allegation that Harper Lee's novel was essentially a plagiarism of Faulkner's.

The book is set in Maycomb County, Alabama, during the depression era of the 1930s. It is a first-person narrative told through the eyes of Jean Louise Finch who, for some reason, goes by the nickname Scout. Although she is only a child at the time of the events described, the narrative voice is that of the adult Jean Louise looking back at her childhood from some point ... Read More:

I loved Zoe Heller's last books but this one is packed with the most unsympathetic bunch of characters I've ever come across in one book. I didn't care about any of them, and the matriarch who dominates the book is so relentlessly unpleasant that I was absolutely indifferent to her fate. Her appalling selfish cruelty towards all her children was implausible and unquestioned by any of her family or friends. Her children were all equally unattractive and, despite their grim family background, I felt no sympathy for their fates.
None of them seemed to learn anything about themselves and none of them seemed truly affected by the death of their father. There were no moving or telling encounters between mother and children, just a lot of vicious unprovoked ranting. ... Read More:

This book has it all, humour, anger and brilliant observations of life and people, that all of us can identify with.
The book is written in such an amateur style (but salinger knows what he is doing)that one has to warm to the character immediately.
Great Book.

Well this one won't keep you awake at night. As a modest runner myself I found much of this book tedious, samey and uninspiring. A book like this is crying out for some dazzling insight into the process, the feeling, the elation of running but instead the reader just gets a not very interesting insight into the writer himself. I can't help but think that Murakami is just doing a walk-through here, scraping the barrel for a few old diary entries at the behest of his publisher. One run merges into another with only the degree of self-indulgence being the main distinguishing feature of each. More than anything I was surprised by the author's afterword in which he claimed to have honed and polished his work ad infinitum before finally releasing it. It doesn't show. Or maybe, to be a little kinder ... Read More:

I'm one of those minority reviewers who was less than gripped by this novel. I finished it but it seemed a bit of a chore at times (although other parts seemed to flow). I felt frustrated by the characters - the love stories between them never seemed convincing. I was hugely interested in the subject matter - I knew so little about the Biafra war and the book prompted me to find out more. However, the traumatic events surrounding our characters (and often happening to them) never seemed to be fully explored. The word Biafra is synonomous with starvation yet in the book I never got the sense of how bad things really were. Then in the last few pages, the war is over and they go home (minus Kainene). Having put so much emotional effort (throughout the book) into fighting for an independent Biafra, defeat ... Read More:

Typical Jackie Collins book. They all tend to merge in together (except the Santangelo books). If you like Jackie Collins then this lives up to the rest, but not very memorable.
