The first half of the book has an alternative universe thing going on which kept making me think of a high school kid trying to rewrite Terminator it was just so cringey; I think intentionally bad and overdramatic dialogue, plus an old man, August Brill, lying in bed inventing it all.

Yet in the second half, the story became for me much more moving, about family, forgiveness, and the redemptive power of stories. Brill and his grief-stricken granddaughter Katya watch old movies together and re-tell the plots later; the story of Brill's own complicated marriage emerges during a long dark night chat with Katya.

There are chunks of the story missing as far as I'm concerned - I wanted to know more about Miriam, Brill's ... Read More:

I've read all of Adele Parks books, and thoroughly enjoyed them all. This book has a different pace to the other books, but again, I couldn't put it down! I would definitely recommend this to anyone who fancies a good summer holiday read.

Written from the perspective of an autistic teenager named Christopher, this wonderful and engaging book is short, easy to read, full of insight, and touching. You will, however, find it irritating at times. But then, what great book isn't?

The plot revolves around the murder of a neighbor's poodle, rather gruesomely discovered, by the teenager. He trys to wrap his mind around who could have done this, and it will come as quite a surprise to the reader who actually committed the deed. But what is even more remarkable is Christopher's way of thinking--totally unlike a "normal" person yet somehow making sense. Filled with puzzles and odd references, this is a book to keep you thinking. It's also terribly entertaining.

I was fortunate to get this book for my birthday and took it with me on hoilday, well what can I say The book is, well its scarey not the fact Sachs and Rhyme are tracking down a serial killer , but its the fact that how Jeff Deaver manages to incoparate computer theft and fraud into this story, Fans of Jeffery Deaver will no doubt have read The Blue Nowhere which is one of my favorite story,s which again computers play a huge part in the story and it real makes you sit back and think is this realy going on in the world we live in, and the truth is it is ,any one who enjoyed BLUE NOWHERE will throughly love this book , plus you tend to develope a kind of love for the characters in the Lyncoln Rhyme novels with their own personality traits 10/10 well recomended

Fortunately, Alan Bennett has already declined a knighthood - meeting England's sword wielding Queen after publishing The Uncommon Reader might be a little, shall we say, 'ambiguous'.

But then again, Alan Bennett has a charm and humour which might, if the present monarch does actually read, disarm even the most, "We are not amused!"

The story is simple; England's Queen suddenly develops a passion for reading which humanises her. It does not, however, result in any final satisfaction and at the end of the book we are left with a twist that seems to be setting Mrs Windsor off on a whole new adventure.

In such stark outline it is a piece of amusing trivia ... and I've read several reviews which don't seem to have moved beyond this level of comprehension: ... Read More:

I recently had to read this as the basis for an essay, but was pleasantly surprised. It is an interesting snippet questioning our view of art and if it has changed throughout history. I found a few of the assumptions a little irritating, such as that Reubens would not have been aware of the device of depicting the human body in an anatomically incorrect pose in order to give the impression of movement. (Particularly as this is something that was well known among artists for hundreds of years and had been used by Leonardo da Vinci for example).

However, if you are looking for a thought provoking, unusual look at how images have been used throughout history, give it a go. Its not a long book and some of the chapters are purely visual to allow the viewer to come to their own conclusions. ... Read More:

In an age of sex being everywhere, media portrayals of everyone being sexual athletes and 'at it' all the time, this was a welcome novel of innocence, longing and anxiety about the 'first time.'

I was touched by this short novel and would read it again. I think McEwan writes about love sensitively and look forward to reading his other works.

Sadly, I was very disapointed with this book, definitely not a patch on the other three, I really was very disapointed and feel quite let down. Alfred was portrayed as a untrustworthy idiot, only interested in his books and his priests. The Danes I am sure would have most certainly killed any "traitor" out of hand, and were the Irish ever involved? if they were, I certainly never learnt that in school, and in my day we were actually taught History although we did know that the Norseman did land there in Eire and make settlements, as they did in America.
I just hope that the next book is better.

I found the 14 year olds perspective really interesting. I read this book for G.C.S.E. and loved it! admittedly I had read it several years before and found it O.K. Looking back I think I missed some of the finer points and the more gory bits put me off (I was about 10 and more interested in ponies at the time).

It is true to say that often studying a book can ruin it, destroying the magic of the story. but in my case study enriched the experience and helped me to understand some of the finer points. at the time I loved the way that understanding added new depths to the text.

I have just read it again and I still love it. one of the greatest things about LOTF is its ability to appeal to both a young and mature audience, and I was delighted to find that, like teaching, age also offers ... Read More:
