As the final chapter in the up until now brilliant "The Invisibles" series, this book is a big disappointment. The writer seems to have made so many story arcs that is impossible to conclude in a coherently manner. He seems to have written himself out on a limb, and then to be able to finish, he cuts of the limb he sits on. I have really loved the series up until this last book. And I had such great expectations. But for me it failed completely to deliver. The use of some illustrators that are quite frankly not good enough for this kind of work also pulls the result down.

The overall view of this graphic novel is interesting, it is based upon the Alice Cooper-esque cental character, the showman, and has an obviously link to his music. This should be of no suprise when you consider that Cooper had considerable in put to the finished artical.
As a novel in it's own right it is limited in storyline and seems to finish before it really gets started, even though the graphics are intriguing in their gothic representation of one of rocks most macarbe characters.
It indulges the Cooper fans who understand some of the musical links and the links to the character names but, as a piece of work in its own right, it seems to have lost in the translation from promotional comic books to collected novel.

If you liked the Matrix trilogy, and especially if you like it enough to buy other spin offs such as the Animatrix, and Enter the Matrix, this is definately for you. It features 12 new short stories (in comic form of course!) based in the world of the Matrix. Like the first edition it has a mixture of "inside" stories, stories with people living ordinary lives with some perception that the world isn't quite right, and "outside" stories, based on those who know the truth about the Matrix.
My favourite story is Run, Saga, Run! About one of the "potentials" with the Oracle, who escapes agents to get out of the Matrix. It also features two stories set after Matrix Revolutions during the truce period between the Machines and the Humans.

157.Preacher Vol 09: Alamo (Preacher (DC Comics)) by: Garth Ennis, Steve (Ilt) Dillon, Steve Dillon
May 01, 2001
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Preacher Vol 09: Alamo (Preacher (DC Comics))
By this stage of the Preacher storyline, it was pretty obvious how bored Garth Ennis had gotten with the book, as the ending was like an off hand dismissal of the characters he had spent so much time developing. But doing this is a fairly typical Ennis move, he bores with characters quite easily and is then quick to run them into the ground, as seen with his recent turn on the Punisher comic book.

The only good thing about this book is that we weren't subjected to yet another Garth Ennis version of the troubles in Northern Ireland, which he amazingly always seems to bring his books back to at some point, even the Punisher for god's sake!

Ennis is insanely overrated and this book is a prime example of why. If you enjoyed the ... Read More:

I'm a fan of the Invisibles, The Filth, Animal Man and Morrison's X-Men, but I'm always prepared to be disappointed by favourite authors. That made it all the more satisfying to receive this graphic novel for Christmas and to read it with great enjoyment and "Morrison-type" satisfaction. Seven Soldiers is almost a new and "smoothed-out" Invisibles. Many who may have been put off by the almost Burroughs-type behaviour of the Invisibles plotting will not have such a problem with Seven Soldiers. I think it can be enjoyed both by the Invisibles-wierdo type reader (like me!) and the more traditional comic reader.

It just makes me so happy to pick up and read a comic like this.
