I purchased this book for a recent trip to Italy and I couldn't have done without it. The menu reader was excellent as was the section on travel. Many Italians were just impressed I tried. Many of the words were also put into useful phrases and the more difficlt words were spelt out phonetically for ease of pronunciation. I would reccomend it for any trip around Italy.

This is a brilliant little book covering a vast array of subjects in great detail, but nowhere does it give any help on pronunciation, which could make the user less understandable in practice. Some hints or tips on pronunciation at the beginning, or pronunciations in phonetics would take this little book from fab to phenomenal!

This is one of the few textbooks from my university degree course that I recommend to general readers. It might have its roots in academia but this book is vital reading for anybody even remotely interested in literature, sociology, psychology, epistemology or history (or, of course, etymology, which is the foundation it's built upon). Put simply, Williams takes common words and critically evaluates their origins. Words such as 'art' or 'culture'... Where do they come from? What is the significance of their original meanings and what can it tell us about the modern usage? How does the meaning of words change, and what causes them to change? Wynford Hicks was my tutor on the City University Journalism degree course, and although he had been working on this book for a long time, it was after despairing at the quality of his student's standard of English that he finally got around to getting it into print. It is an excellent reference for all the usual grammar and spelling pitfalls, and a guide to avoiding the many, many errors, malaproprisms and other misuses of English that pedantic sub-eds love to punish lazy hacks with. I've recommended the book to numerous colleagues in the past and I've still got a copy on my desk for solving arguments. An essential tool for anyone who writes for a living.

Perhaps I just don't learn this way. The music did nothing for me, and I can't think of any phrases "anchored into my long term memory". Perhaps I don't play it enough. The CD is fine if you want to learn stock phrases like "I would like to order...", "Have you got..." "Is there...." but what do you do when someone responds in German. I want to learn German so I can ask, understand the answer and respond. It will help you "get by" but not to have a conversation - go for broke and get Michel Thomas instead.

This book is so easy to understand. I'm awful at grammar but this breaks it down into small chunks. The activities are amaazing and definately help develop your understanding. I don't think I could have passed my English A level without this books help. I can't recommend it enough!!
