So many grammar books assume you know the mechanics of grammar but this is one of the very few which doesn't - it's probably the only one. Beautifully presented, lots of summary tables and the use of coloured type really highlights the essential bits to grasp. It's a joy just to sit and read and that's saying something for a grammar book! You need to be at A level standard and above for this tome. Just don't bother considering any of the many other grammar books on the market. (Also, it has N, A, G and D in the proper order too!)

Oxford beginner's Japanese dictionary is pretty good on the whole for the aspiring student of Japanese, but is by no means perfect. On the plus side, all of the Japanese is in kana (you need to know kana if you ever want to learn the language properly), and the most useful/common kanji are given next to each translation. The selection of words matches the needs of a beginner well, meaning that you don't have to trawl through endless pages of useless vocabulary to find what you want. There are also grammatical examples to accompany some of the translations; however, some of these are quite advanced, and since a literal translation is not provided they aren't quite as useful as they could be. I do admit that this book, and other similar titles by the same author, have some value. I believe that they also prove popular. However, I would like to express my view that they really are of limited use. If you are a beginner and new to BSL this book can be a good study aid and reminder to things covered in class - but it certainly is NO replacement for attending a BSL class! I also think that even beginners will soon out grow this book. If you are serious about BSL and plan to keep on learning,It has more information than most signers will ever want to know!

This is a good basic introduction but I can't rate this any higher than three stars because there is little advice within this book on practical teaching skills which I would have expected from the title. The text is somewhat turgid but is improved by the helpful use of different typography to highlight section headings and important ideas raised in each chapter. The practical examples used are quite helpful. A useful complementary text to this book is Jim Scrivener's 'Learning Teaching' which has much more to say on the practical issues of teaching a class.

Being a beginner in Italian I have bought other books which are difficult to get in to. However this book is excellent and the cassettes which accompany them are fantastic. They give you the chance to repeat what is said in dialogues and are very good.

This textbook is so bad! It jumps around all over the place, the sound bites are confusing and the layout is all flash and no substance. Save your money!
