I was slightly dismayed to see that the only review of this course had been overly negative; after lots of searching for an effective self-teaching course, I thought this was a fantastic find. Yes, the CD's are mislabelled, but that is far outweighed by the textbooks clear layout, supporting and fun exercises, knowlege consolidation pages, and clear grammar and vocab points. Only other complaint is that one might have to replay the listening exercises a few times to understand them in their entirety, but overall, I think this is an excellent course I would reccomend to anyone wanting to learn Spanish.

I'm a final year French Studies student and I love this book! At this stage everyone expects you to know all of the rules and this book has been a great help to me. I would say it is a book for the more advanced student, intermediate and above. For complete beginners I would recommend the BBC French grammer book, which I own as well and they are both brilliant.

I liked this book. It is written with Bryson's usual witty and engaging style. It is a book that is absolutely of the high standard any reader of Bryson's previous books will have come to expect. Having said that, this book is certainly not for everyone, even if you have thoroughly enjoyed many of Bryson's previous offerings. I have an amateur's interest in language and this book provided me with an informative introduction to its history and quirky nature. If you are not interested in the subject I think you will probably find this book very dull indeed. There are some downsides to bare in mind, even for those with an avid interest. This book was essential reading for me during my literacy specialist tutor training, and two years later it is still in regular use. If you want to check your use of grammar, wonder what word is used for truanting in South Wales, or are puzzled as to what a morpheme is, the answers are here. It never let me down when I wanted to check something. Not the cheapest or most portable book there is, but definitely the best.

The big hardback thesauri are too big, and the mini or Gem thesauri are too small for your needs. Then look no further than The Oxford Paperback Thesauarus (OPT). According to the introductory blurb, it is an abridgement of the New Oxford Thesaurus of English published in 2000. In fact it is 95% of said New Oxford Thesaurus of English. Having downloaded the pdf file with a sample of the larger thesaurus and compared it to this OPT, I was amazed. For a fraction of the price you do indeed get an average of 95% of the content! The layout is good: headwords are in a bold sans-serif font and the synonyms are in a (for some maybe a little too small) serif font. I bought the CD as part of the Contatti Italian to teach a class. I speak Italian fluently, and even then found the layout confusing. The CD is not divided into the various sub-sections so one cannot FF or RW except between chapters and one therefore wastes much time waiting for the right sub-section to be played. I would therefore NOT recommend it to anyone unless the CD is remastered to allow stop/start in between each sub-section.

I made the mistake of ordering the ordering the 5 CD pack with the Language Pack pt.2. In fact the Pack includes the CDs. I haven't done the course yet but found the equivalent BBC Spanish course excellent.
