Books : Michel Thomas Foundation Course: French (Michel Thomas Series)
I learnt more from the first CD than from five years at school. Without doubt this is the easiest and most effective way to learn French. I recently returned from France on a family holiday. I certainly had more confidence than ever before when speaking French.
You are advised to pause the CD and try things out for yourself before the students attempt it, but to be honest you can usually get there before them. I've used the CDs in the car and when out jogging, with no need to pause. If I had to find a groan it would be at the 'not so good' student. Sometimes you get the feeling that she isn't listening and is in her own little world. There are times when I think Michel is thinking the same thing about her.

This book is worth its weight in gold for anyone who needs to write essays and I have recommended it to many of my friends. I have always been able to write decent enough essays, getting A grade GCSEs and A/ B grade Alevels, but my undergraduate essays never quite seemed to reach the top marks. I couldn't quite understand this though because I always got top marks for my scientific reports, literature reviews, and exams yet my essays never seemed to go above a 2:1. If I put in a huge amount of effort I would be able to reach a high 2:1, while hardly any effort would get me a low 2:1, I just couldn't seem to break out of it! That was until I read this book.

This book was an absolute delight to read. It is extremely well written, interesting and ... Read More:

When I first started studying Latin I made the foolish error of buying the Collins Latin Dictionary. Having been bitterly disappointed with it from the very beginning, I decided I'd do well to buy the Oxford equivalent. This is worlds superior in every way. It is, of course, limited by the fact that it is a 'pocket' volume (I would imagine that a colossal home version would be able to offer a great deal more), but for general use it is very generous indeed. In fact, I will be generous myself and assert that it is a great deal more concise and reliable than many pocket editions of dictionaries that I have had occasion to use. There is a considerable grammar section in the centre that is very valuable for refreshing a lagging memory. Of course, the market isn't considerable ... Read More:

Before each exercise there is very little explanation on how to complete it, also there is no english translation for any of the french sentances. This is because you need another book called "French Grammar and Usage" as explained in the user guide. In "French Grammar and Usage" (althought I don't have the book)explains fully how to use ce qui, dont, y, en etc. Then you use this book to practice. If I had known I would have brought "French grammer usage" instead. I live in france and speak french quite fluently therfore vocabulary is of no problem. I just wanted to perfection my grammar. I wouldn't recommend this book on it's own due to lack of explanation.

Found this pack really useful. It has helped me to get started on spanish and I have found the book gives interesting information about life in Spain/South American. Answers are all in the back so think this is a good pack if you want to start learning Spanish without a class.

This textbook is based on the insights from current research in lexical studies, text linguistics and pragmatics to maintain a constant link between language, translation and the social and cultural environment. Easy to follow, despite the firm grounding in linguist theory, is starts at a simple level and grows in complexity, widening the focus. The author relates the theoretical concepts to authentic examples of translated texts in a variety of languages, which are all simple to understand. Each chapter concludes with practical exercises; a combination that provides a sound all round knowledge.

I've just completed both this and the advanced course and I think that they are both excellent and achieve very well what they set out to do.

I think that a lot of the criticism of the courses come from people who do not know before they buy them what Michel's methods are about.

These courses will -
- give you a solid grounding in the structure of the Spanish language
- teach American Spanish rather than Spanish Spanish if you get what I mean, though as far as I can tell the differences are mainly ones of pronunciation
- give you a great big boost of confidence after only a very short time; you will feel like you're learning really quickly.

The courses will not -
- give you Spanish that you can use for holidays. ... Read More:

A generally well organised primer for those planning to take French to a serious level. The book is well laid out and the explainations are for the most part very clear.

There are one or two errors in the book (for example in the list of impersonal clauses that take the subjunctive - I hasten to add that my native French speaking teacher identified these, not me), but not significant enough to devalue it. The cross referencing is a little patchy in places and some of the exercises on the dry side, but then since when was grammar supposed to be fun!

The section on verb usage is mostly excellent but the section on pronouns would benefit from expansion and clearer examples. Overall though, a very good buy.
