Ms Duffy is loved by readers even more than by the critics. She is wise, and she is clever. She is also very moving and extremely funny. This volume introduces us to Mrs Aesop, Mrs Darwin and even Mrs Faust and Mrs Quasimodo and so on...

These are not poems meant for academic study, these are poems to be read and enjoyed. And they are very enjoyable, with sharp wit throughout.

There are times in her more recent work when Duffy strikes me as the poet that Elizabeth Jennings was too frightened to be, here however CAD lets her hair down and unleashes a delight of barbs and sympathy.

The only disappointment for me is The Kray Sisters, but then, I hate so called cockney rhyming slang. Stuff your 'lady Godivas' ... Read More:

I enjoyed this book immensely. It is very tempting to describe the book by what it is not, not autobiography, not a companion to "Sorry I haven't a clue", not about Jazz... Though I think anyone with an interest in these areas will enjoy it.
The book is quite literally a collection of rambling thoughts and reminiscences - which does not sound very appealing. But Humphs love of language and music shine though continually, and it flows along in a delightful manner.
While his achievements in Jazz and Comedy are well known, Humph's journalism successes are perhaps less well known - and in my opinion his abilities as a writer are every bit as great, and that shines from the pages of this book. I really think anyone with a sense of humour will ... Read More:

Quite simply, if you want to be a writer, this is a must read. Succinct, brilliantly arrogant at times, but he tells it as it is. Recommend without reservation.

I feel like i really know Martha Long, she has such a way of engrossing you in the words there is no skipping chapters with her!

I know this is awful but i was left slightly disappointed becuase i thought all the questions that went unanswered in the first book would be answered in this one, but i think she may have left it open to write another one.

I now want to know what happens next!

Putting aside the storyline of `Touching the Void' my reason for submitting this review is to pay homage to a masterpiece of writing. If I had to select a single volume as the very best from my collection of over 1,000 climbing and mountaineering books it would be Joe Simpson's `Touching the Void'. It is unrivalled; so with almost 100 mainly 5-star reviews already placed for this Amazon offering there appears little need to add another. However I concentrate on manner of writing. I have just submitted a review of Mick Fowler's second autobiographical book `On Thin Ice' in which, though I saluted his imaginative and courageous approach to extreme and exacting expeditions around the world, I was critical of his writing style. I suggested Mick Fowler's modesty ... Read More:

I am an avid fan of "Ugly" and bought this book because I wanted to continue to follow her story. This book to me doesn't seem to contain the same emotional flow as her first. It's a good read and because you're interested in her you want to keep on reading - I just felt it was slightly rushed toward the end. Still worth reading however and I still admire her courage!

This is a very welcome return to the Yorkshire Dales and the people - both young and old - who inhabit them. This book is imbued with the love, laughter, hardship, tears and honesty that his previous books have been filled with.

"Mester Phinn" is a very good story-teller and has an easy style about his writing. The love he has for the people and places he writes about is thee for all to see. The characters and characterisations are as colourful and fulsome as in his previous outings.

This book is a wonderful way to spend a pleasant few hours after a hard day at work, or just a good book to become lost in at any time of the day.

The ending has the feeling of the last in the series, although there are one or two 'loose ends' that ... Read More:

... and if it were possible against the very impossibility of such an occurrence, I would have loved to change the epilogue of this book. Not just the epilogue, but so much else in between. And not because it's a badly written book, just the opposite. I believe that the author was able to capture the very essence of his friend Stuart Shorter and at the same time convey a strong message about the vulnerability of the innocent. It is a book about a man who suffered greatly throughout his life and as a result ended up on the streets.

What Alexander Masters extrapolates from Stuart is a remarkable, incredible tale of a life lived on the edge at all times. Sometimes a river of words flow out of him. Sometimes they elude him (especially when recounting the ... Read More:

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, absolutely engaging. The early most significant struggles of his life depicted in this book fight with you as you try to find a good point to stop for the day.
A must read for everyone!
