Gripping. A real page turner, Major Chris Hunter clearly has a gift for putting you there in the action. Peppered with British Army humour (quip about the REME guy "testiculating" -- waving his hands in the air and talking... had me in stiches). This is a superb book, really moving in some places and i'm not the kinda guy to be moved easily, but i defy anyone to come to the end of this book without feeling an immense amount of emotion.

This book was the first i read of Private Johnson Beharry VC. I read Sniper One by SGT Dan Mills after this book (another good read, based in Al-Amarrah at roughly the same time, not as expertly written as this book but really engaging read all the same) which also described the steely courage of ... Another moving story from Cathy Glass. Once started I found it difficult to put the book down and was soon gripped by the story. As in her other two excellent books, the authors warmth and affection to her foster children comes through in her style of writing and makes her books very moving and also very readable. I found I just had to finish the book as soon as possible to find out how the story unfolds. The book is not just an eye opener on what terrible things can happen to innocent children and the struggles and difficulties they face as a result, but also shows how a truly caring person can help them and can make a real difference in their lives. Well done Cathy for another inspiring book.

Don't believe any of the hype. It makes no difference whether this lame tale is viewed as autobiography or as fiction. It is totally worthless as an example of either genre. James Frey appears to be an unoriginal and illiterate chancer, who tries desperately to sound like Jack Kerouac or Hunter S. Thompson - but lacks their talents. His style is repetitive and pretentious. His story line is banal, cliche-ridden and implausible. His characters lack substance or credibility. Resist the hype. Don't waste your money (or your time) on this tedious, over-publicised eyewash.

Although this book doesn't tell us anything we don't already know, it never does any harm to be reminded from time to time. It's a heartwarming and truthful account of a friendship between an older man in the last months of his life and a younger man who has always been inspired by him.

We're reminded of the importance of caring for one another in a world where we simply don't take time often enough (sometimes never!) to tell people how much we love and appreciate them.

It doesn't shy away from the 'ugly' side of illness and death which people wonder and worry about but hardly ever discuss. It's only human to be scared and to have self pity but we learn how Morrie turned his negative emotions into positive ones, and fear into acceptance ... Read More:

I don't like their music, I don't particularly like the band members but I read this and was blown away, quite simply the best book I have read. I love the style of it. It's rock and Roll, It's Sex and it's drugs and it's also moving in places. Neil Strauss must be creditted for the style in which the book is written, but the band wrote their own story and what a story it is....

Leigh Fermor's great classic is extraordinary. His language is immensely beautiful, but I believe that the secret to understand the book is that he is actually painting pictures with words. There are some great set pieces in this second volume such as the Easter ceremonies in Hungary, his unforgettable aristocratic hosts and the chateau life he began to lead after Munich while still camping out from time to time. His descriptions of those country houses, and their denizens, particularly once he crosses into Romania, are like small jewels.

The great glory of this book is the trip he makes in Transylvania: it shows a world which no longer exists (Romanian, Hungarians, Swabians etc all living together in one area) and makes one wish to go there immediately. ... Read More:

This is probably the most boring and unenlightening book I have ever read. My wife was asked to read it as part of a literature appreciation group and said it was shocking in its revelations. I bought another copy of it from Waterstones for one of her friends and the assistant was gushing in her enthusiasm for it. I decided to read it and thus wasted an unnecessary amount of valuable time.
If you can believe 10% of what Jung Chang asks you to believe you will be stretching credulity. She is obsessed with her own family's righteousness in the face of unmitigated evil and her attention to trivialities shows a great sense of imagination.
Instead of a simple family tree we have a long boring tirade of the minutiae of everyday life affecting 900 million people ... Read More:
