This is Mike Gayle at his best... a writing style that is humorous without trying too hard, always touching (I can't count how many times I got goosebumps or had tears in my eyes) and very easy to relate to, especially if you have a mixed group of friends.

It is written in first person but from the point of view of every character, which works well, and will therefore appeal to both sexes even more than is usually the case with Mike's novels.

Overall, a more serious mood throughout the book - and a more mature version of his previous work.

Wanted to savour this book, but I really couldn't put it down. You are gripped from the very first page. Definitely a new competitor for my favourite Mike Gayle book! ... Read More:

It took me a few chapters to really get into this but once I did I found it hard to put down. As usual with Gibson, he comes up with some cultural movements that I hadn't been aware of until I picked the book up: guerrilla marketing in Pattern Recognition and this time locative art. Technological trends aside, Gibson has a wonderful way with language. His sentences tend to be punchy like Raymond Chandler but far more poetic at the same time. I could really just read this book for his use of words- the plot is just extra icing on top. I can picture each scene with a cinema type clarity that few other authors achieve (for me at least) I love the little details he gives us. GSG-9 Adidas swat shoes? How cool. Only little quibble: covert ear pieces as used ... Read More:

I have been waiting for this book for years.... and now when I have read it, I hope it was never written. IT does not at all live up the the Pillars of earth. Neither does it compare to some of the other good books Ken Follet has written. 150 pages less and it might have been ok. I try to end all the books I start, but this was heavy. The story line was light, some of the "histories" within the story are totally out of scope (like nuns in french war). I read 6 books in my vacation. This was the worst.

I felt completely depressed when pregnant with my second son when I read this book! Mr Biddulph basically tells you that, as a mother, you are important to your sons till they reach five, then you can basically forget it, as you will always be of secondary importance to them compared to their fathers and you should just get on with doing their laundry and cooking them the odd meal or two!
I'm sure he is right to a certain degree but, after speaking to many people after reading this, it is a huge generalisation to say that most men worship their fathers and take their mothers for granted.
Also, he could really have written one chapter instead of a whole book as the central message is repeated again and again: "Male children need strong male ... Read More:

On the whole, the author has done a very good job of bringing together the plotlines from the previous books in the series. The ending is a little contrived, but that was to be expected. There are plenty of contrived sections and sub-plots in the previous books from the series - this is, after all, a fantasy for older children (adult readers often forget that), and it requires some leaps of faith to allow it to move on. It's not supposed to have a solid logical foundation.

I can't understand the moans about the middle "camping" section, nor suggestions that the book is too dark or gruesome, certainly not for today's average teenager. The whole book engrossed me all the way through. A great page-turner. Rowling is an excellent writer and her ... Read More:

Such a lovely board book and in my opinion it's perfect for babies and toddlers of any age really.
It's especially good for reading before a daytime nap (or any winding down time) as the beautiful rhymes and gentle illustrations can be quite soothing.
My 2 year old daughter loves it and I highly recommend it.
Buy it and you'll soon see...it will come out from the bookshelf time and time again.

It normally takes me months to read a book but this one had me hooked within minutes; I couldn't put it down and managed to read it in just two days.

As with all of Jill's books, everyone ended up with the most suitable partner; getting there was both tortuous and a delight, although at times the hoped-for outcome seemed out of reach. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

My kids - aged 2 and 4 - love the original Gruffalo story and ask to read it almost every bedtime. There was initial excitement when I brought this one home. But after a couple of readings they quickly stopped asking for it. If I suggest reading it now, they say "no, we want the first Gruffalo story".

In truth, the original Gruffalo story is so good that it's a very, very tough act to follow. But, even allowing for that, this sequel almost entirely lacks most of the features that make the first story so memorable. It hasn't got anything like the same rhythm in the writing. And the plot meanders its way to a weak pay-off that has little impact and doesn't make much sense.

All-in-all, a disappointing follow-up to the excellent original.

The Blokes guide books are absolutly fantastic, and a real must for all expectant fathers! The book is written in such a readable non-bulls$%t way, that it cannot fail to make you laugh, cry and think deeply about your forthcoming arrival. Yes it's humours, but it is FULL of useful and CRITICAL info. I read this book prior to attending any anti-natel classes, and found that when we went to the classes, I was actually one of the most knowledgable people in the room (except for the mid-wife!!!) I cannot recommend this book enough, but it, read it, and pass the word on to all your male friends! Lastly good luck with your little one!
