After reading or rather dragging my way through this book I felt I had to comment. I adore her other books but this was so slow, dull and how she got a novel out of what should have been a short story I'll never know. If you are thinking about buying this, don't, I'd have given you my copy but I wouldn't want you to waste your time and, anyway, I've placed it somewhere environmentally friendly!!

A brilliant book mixing adventure travel with history, geography and anthropology. The author describes his brutal journey across the enormous expanse of land that is the Democratic Republic of Congo. Tracking Stanley's exploratory expedition, the book is shocking and horrifying in what it reveals about this destitute country. It is a great read that's filled with humour and compassion for the Congolese people. As someone about to travel to the DRC, this was an insightful introduction to an amazing country - all of its wonders and dangers. Now that I have safely returned from the Congo I have recommended this to all my family and friends.

I'm sorry to say that this one didn't light my fire. It centres on a schizophrenic artist recently deceased and the lives of her family. The central character (the artist) presented as an inconsiderate and self absorbed person (not withstanding the severity of her illness) and the lives and concerns of those around her were simply not that interesting. Left me cold, I'm afraid.

There isn't much product information available on Amazon so to give you an idea what it's about, Adam Chase lives in New York having left his home town five years following an acquital from a murder charge - all this is revealed within first and second chapter so it isn't a plot spoiler - but his friend from home calls him and he has to go back. When he gets home people start turning up dead and unfortunately Adam looks like number one suspect with only him being able to clear his name.

The writing style took me a little while to settle into. The sentences are disjointed in places and there is no descriptive narrative as such. The only thing I can compare it to is Gordon Ramsey when he does his recipes and he simply says the bog standard ingredient ... Read More:

How many times have you bought a cook book and only end up using two or three recipes from it. Having opened Ottolenghi I started at the beginning and read through all the recipes and have not found one that I don't want to do. I haven't been to the restaurant but the pictures in the book certainly whetted my appetite.

Not a Grant County/Sara Linton book, and if you've read the last one, Skin Privilege, you may agree with me that Slaughter's bold character and plot decisions make for something a bit rare and wonderful in this genre -a sense of realism in the 3-dimensional characters so that you really care about their pathway through the narrative far more than the nasty stuff - and can't put the book down!(Hence the breathtaking ending to Skin Privilege -see linked discussion). Will Trent, who we met in Triptych, is even more compelling in this book and manages to be a real hero rather than a fairytale. Just as excellent as the other Slaughter books. If you've not read any Karin Slaughter yet - get them all, amazing. In fact they convinced me that here was a genre I was missing out on but on trying ... Read More:

This is a book that will make you think (a lot) and will successfully draw you back into the 70s. Written as a diary entry, this is a very humourous, although in an ironic, pessimistic sort of way, and dark novel. The story of Michael Engleby - a boy from Reading trying to fit in among his peers at Cambridge University, is ultimately one of the best books I've read this year, with an extraordinary twist and a cliff-hanger ending.

I was quite apprehensive about weaning before I started; I didn't have a clue how or what to start with. So I decided to purchase this book, and was so glad with my purchase. It gives great guidleines on the weaning process, which many simple to cook recipes and ideas. I don't know how I would've coped without this book!
