Not living in the UK, I actually hadn't seen the programme and the book was a christmas gift. It's an easy read telling some good stories - and let's face it, who doesn't like a good story? I found the dragons' backgrounds very interesting and some of their values very close to mine. Lots of ideas in there for the budding entrepreneur. Would I actually go on the show with my own ideas - I'm not so sure. Would I contact certain dragons with a solid business proposition - I hope so.

How come $2.3 trillion dollars of Western aid has been spent in the last 50 years mostly in Africa, my native continent, and yet millions of children still die of preventable diseases like dysentery, cholera and malaria? Why have the vast amounts of aid money and Western good intentions not been able to lift Africa out of back-breaking poverty? William Easterly's argument, in this fascinating book, is that Western aid has failed because of the traditional approach that it has taken to tackling Third World poverty: planning and bureaucracy.

According to Mr Easterly, Western aid in the form on the Bretton Woods institutions (the World Bank and the IMF) is the most recent reincarnation of the White Man's Burden, a phrase which was immortalized by ... Read More:

I'm a masters law student having studied at undergraduate level in another discipline, therefore credit myself some knowledge of what makes a good textbook. I, together with many others from my course, have found the book confusing in structure, lightweight on important detail and poorly written to the extent that some case exerpts conflict in detail with the law reports it purports to summarise. It is unclear from sections of the book which are the salient cases & indeed it spends far too long discussing cases which are no longer applicable to certain principles. For a student fresh to the subject I find this unacceptable & have found it necessary to find another core text to replace this to enable a decent level of understanding.

The concept for this book is reasonably good, but can be boiled down:

1) Choose your attitude - you can either be happy or miserable at the office. The work stays the same whether you're cheery or not.

2) Play. Have a bit of a play at the office.

3) Make their day. Do something every day which will be the best part of someone else's day.

4) Be present. Don't be thinking about your holiday or last night's TV when you could be fully focussed on work. Interact with people.

Beyond that, it's a 45min read about how one woman implemented this into her company and even that isn't hugely rewarding as the book stops at the point she implements these techniques.

In "Blue Ocean Strategy", Professors Kim and Mauborgne expound an excellent strategic concept for innovation in the spirit of "Disruption" or "Thinking out of the box". Where "Blue Ocean Strategy" diverges from the idea of rather vague "Blue Skies Thinking" is that the philosophy is firmly rooted in reality with a well thought-through strategic sequence for working with the concept and tips on the nitty-gritty of actually implementing this throughout the organisation.

In addition, the authors make the point that innovation must not always depend on a technological breakthrough and the idea of "Value innovation" is central to the concept.

The examples used are super - as well as the "usual suspects" such as Starbucks and Co. (yawn!) - there are some terrific ... Read More:
