This book is packet with knowledge. It covers crucial topics that everyone who is in the corporate world has to deal. From that perspective this is definitely a must read! The most negative aspect of the book in my opinion is the way the message is written. It is written from the perspective of a business man with a long and successful career. So, I think people who already are in a corporate world and already have experienced in the first person of all or even some of the topics that are discussed in the book will get tremendous value from this book. This is the book that pretty much started it all and inspired generations of Personal development authors. The 'family tree' that comes from this guy is very impressive, He employed Clement Stone, who mentored Jack Canfield of 'Chicken soup for the Soul' fame. Jack Canfield also featured in 'The Secret' which is the latest craze amongst personal development. The whole tenet of 'The Secret' is just a small part of this book. Napolean Hill deals with the law of attraction but in a very practical way. I first encountered this book almost 30 years ago. I don't think I was quite ready for it and didn't fully 'get it' but it still stuck with me and I have re-read it a number of times over the years. Every time I read it I get more from it. I ... Tim Harford has again managed to write a book on Economics that I read in a weekend (well Thursday to Saturday, but weekends are stretchy!). Give that I've tried and failed to finish the Black Swan and wasn't really all that impressed with Freakonomics that's a pretty big recommendation. In this book Harford dwells more on how cities can be more amenable to live in, rational prostitutes and race and sex roles. You can tell he's started a family since the last book as a lot of the topics focus on 'quality of life' issues. Again underlying the book is that we make rational choices within our limitations and that we respond to incentives with surprising deftness. This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn not only the basics of Project Management, but also wants to acquire a solid foundation in the subject. However, at just under 400 pages, it is not exactly a rapid introduction to the subject - more a through one. If you find yourself thrust into the role of PM, at no notice, and with no experience - a not exactly unheard of senario - this book is too comprehensive, and you'll find it almost impossible to find the 30 pages that you need if you have to hit the ground running within 24 hours. Should you be in this unfortunate situation, a thick skin and a brazen attitude of confidence will probably be more useful. I found O'Connor & Lages's style to be useful and straightforward, with a continuous emphasis on practice. Very helpful for someone familiar with NLP and keen to use it in coaching. Regular reminders to avoid psychoanalysing clients and just helping them get on with their agenda proved very useful to me. Very useful book.
