On a trip to China I ordered this phrasebook as I have absolutely no knowledge of Mandarin and was told China was quite difficult to get around in due to the low level of English spoken over there.

In truth, at places like airports staff there will speak English and signs will be written in English. In Beijing airport I was even able to ask a janitor a question in English and he understood me. In more rural China (specifically I went to Fujian province) it's very unlikely that you'll come across someone that can speak English, but places still have some signs in English.

Following on from my previous point, the writing system will pose a problem and is one this book cannot solve, not that it aims to. Rather you will ... Read More:

192.The Oxford Russian Grammar and Verbs (Dictionary) by: Terence Wade

This book condenses a lot of information into a small space, but doesn't scrimp on detail - it covers all the major points of larger grammars such as Wade's huge Russian Grammar tome, but is compact enough to carry round in your pocket.

Each point is very clearly explained with a lot of vocabulary in the examples - very useful for boosting your base vocabulary in Russian as you revise / learn the grammar.

The verbs section is perhaps a little short, and you might want to supplement the book with another dedicated, more detailed verb book like The Big Silver Book of Russian Verbs: 555 Fully Conjugated Verbs (Big Book of Verbs Series), but as far as grammar guides go, you won't miss any of the important points by relying ... 193.Reading Latin: Text by: Peter V. Jones, Keith C. Sidwell

This is the companion volume to Reading Latin: Grammar, Vocabulary, Exercises (GVE), and there is an independent Study Guide which isn't necessary but is extremely useful, so you do need to get the full set. As reviwer Grainger below has said, the text doesn't contain translations but these ARE in the independent study guide together with the answers to all the exercises in GVE. If you're learning alone (or even in a class) the 3rd volume is therefore indispensable.

The Text is brilliant if you're interested in classical latin since it includes 'real' (though initially adapted) latin from authors such as Plautus, Cicero, Sallust, Caesar, Vergil and Catullus. With the help of the GVE you'll be reading Plautus from day 1, and will be moving ... Read More:

194.Italian: Beginner (Collins Language Revolution) (Book with 2CDs): Beginner by: Tony Buzan

As explained in the other reviews you get a two CD set and an A5 booklet with this pack.

It's all been nicely put together for the beginner (this is definitely aimed at the phrase book/ tourist market) and the stand alone CD is a good idea.
However the main problem with this is the inclusion of Tony Buzan's mind maps - I just can't see that they are helpful in learning a language.

It's also quite annoying that he lays claim to teaching techniques that really wouldn't surprise Plato or Socrates! If you can get past Buzan's self advertising this is a very well put together set and will put you well on the way to learning enough to get you by on a business trip or holiday.

This self proclaims itself as being different from other courses because you get the likely reply. Frankly every language course I've ever tried gives you a dialogue.

The language is barked out rapidly and I feel a bit dizzy if I just listen- you tend to get lost quick.

However, from the limited phrases given:
you could...find a hotel.. visit the Palace of Culture. Get drunk on red or white wine or the vodka you bought as a souvenir. Struggling down the stairs in the morning (lifts seem to be in short supply) it's a good job all you can manage is toast, cereal and juice because that's all that's on offer according to this phrasebook. If you've gone a bit too far and have to declare you're ill to every man and woman you can find, you can ... Read More:

I think i am in a fair postion to review this text-book, as the two authors have been my French teachers for the past 4 years, and i was particularly impressed when i heard that Tim was to have a book published.
Upon hearing the title and seeing front cover i was worried that this book was on the subject of mountain-biking, but my worries were relieved when i opened the book to see it is indeed an A-level French text-book.
The book covers themes on the syllabus effectively, though i feel that the book decides to omit a neutral perspective, and opts for a more socialist approach, and is perhaps rather too generous to towards the likes of José Bové and Georges Brassens. Also it bears a remarkable resemblance to Francoscopie.
The grammar notes make university ... Read More:

This is a superb course for the advanced learner (you really need to be AT LEAST post GCE level, or have spent a reasonable amount of time living in France). This course is targeted primarily at the self-study learner, but I even found it useful as a backup to my undergraduate studies. There is plenty of conversation and listening practice on the cassettes, and the course covers contemporary subjects such as the environment, health, tourism, French national holidays and the French press. I only have one small quibble in that the grammar covered, although advanced, is quite brief and you would perhaps expect a course of this level to be more thorough. However, I suspect the author has kept grammar to a minimum perhaps in an effort to ensure that the course is 'user-friendly'. ... Read More:

I cannot talk highly enough about this series! I have been trying to learn Arabic independently over the last 6 months, in which time I have bought numerous books and dvds to help me. None of these compare to this one: the book is clearly layed out with exercises that are simple to understand and increase in difficulty as you progress through each step. The DVD puts Linguaphone's to shame: it has a menu that makes navigation easy, a variation of teaching techniques for all learners and the sound is of a good quality. I would highly recommend this to anyone trying to learn Arabic independently or with tuition. Al-kitaab fii ta allum al-arabiyya follows this book in the series and is equally as excellently written.
