Books : The Zahir: A Novel of Love, Longing and Obsession
I've returned once again to one of my favorite authors to review his latest work. Paulo Coelho of international fame for The Alchemist, 11 Minutes and The Devil and Miss Prym, has released his latest The Zahir. According to the book, the Zahir in Arabic means present, visible, incapable of being unnoticed. It is something that grabs our thought, mind and spirit and demands our full attention. It is believed to lead to either Holiness or madness. In this book, the Zahir is a woman, an idea of a woman, a longing. Our main character sounds very familiar to our author; in fact our hero is a famous author now living in Paris, with his books being published in nearly every language. (which sounds like Mr. Coelho. This book is being published in 50 ... Read More:

Books : By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept
The introduction to the book is wonderfully written about the spiritual importance of love "True love is an act of total surrender" and "To love is to be in communion with the other and to discover in that other the spark of God." It really whetted my appetite for the main story. However I felt the main story never really engaged me and I almost didn't care if the two main characters ended up being together or not.

The main character is Pilar, a young Spanish woman who has settled for seeking the conventional life of study, job and finding a man to marry. She goes to hear her childhood sweetheart speak who has entered into the religious life after travelling the world. From there the two of them spend 5 days together. It is the story ... Read More:

Books : The Fifth Mountain (P.S.)

Paulo Coelho writes beautifully, and it's very easy to get swept up in his prose, but I felt that this time there was something rushed in his storytelling.

More overtly religious and less poetic than his other books I've read (The Alchemist, Veronica Decides to Die, Eleven Minutes), and although the usual faith-hope-justice theme was present here too, the story here was less meandering, the twists and turns here were more abrupt, and his hero's efforts seemed to me to be to a large extent futile.

Having said that, I read this book in almost a single sitting and definitely enjoyed reading it, but it didn't make me feel inspired or elated like some of his previous works.
(I'd rate it three-and-a-half stars if I could.) ... Read More:
