Obviously everybody who reads this book will probably have a different opinion about it, but after reading several of his books I was a bit disappointed with this one. It's still written in his usual style and I love how he expresses himself, but the storyline was a bit of a let-down for me. I expected more from Paulo Coelho.

The introduction to the book is wonderfully written about the spiritual importance of love "True love is an act of total surrender" and "To love is to be in communion with the other and to discover in that other the spark of God." It really whetted my appetite for the main story. However I felt the main story never really engaged me and I almost didn't care if the two main characters ended up being together or not. The main character is Pilar, a young Spanish woman who has settled for seeking the conventional life of study, job and finding a man to marry. She goes to hear her childhood sweetheart speak who has entered into the religious life after travelling the world. From there the two of them spend 5 days together. I have read a few Paulo Coelho books. He is one of my favourite authors and this is definitely the best book I have read so far. It is quite depressing at times, but really gets you thinking about life and its meaning, so if you're into deep meaningful stuff, this is a good book to read.

An anonymous person sent me this book as a gift. S/he must have though it would benefit me in some way, or maybe s/he was just having a laugh. S/he needn't have bothered. It's meaningless, but sounds meaningful. Not since reading Kahlil Gibran's "The Prophet" have I come across such pretentious twaddle.

Paulo Coelho, in my opinion is not known for his brilliance in writing, but more for the underlying spiritual message his books provokes. This book to me, was very typical example of this. The story itself, told as a narrative to an unknown biographer,is of Athena, a woman who inspired so many people, bewitching, mysterious but ultimately influential. Her story, is as incredible as it's inspiring. Coelho, delivers on the inspiration, but not on the writing.Buy if a fan.
