Warren Ellis tales this tale of the reinvention of Tony Stark as Iron Man in preperation for the Civil War. The story is gripping, with all the characterisations done perfectly. The characters feel like real people, with flaws and emotions rather than just wise-cracking bad guys, heroes and side-kicks, which is really where Ellis comes into his own in my opinion. Next, the artwork. Adi Granov is truly a master of comic art. Every page is so amazingly done, some of the images I had to flick back to once I'd turned the page just to look at them again. The lack of typical comic sound effects also works with the ultra-realistic artwork to make this story about such a larger than life character feel deeply routed in the real world. Read More:

I'm a fan of the Invisibles, The Filth, Animal Man and Morrison's X-Men, but I'm always prepared to be disappointed by favourite authors. That made it all the more satisfying to receive this graphic novel for Christmas and to read it with great enjoyment and "Morrison-type" satisfaction. Seven Soldiers is almost a new and "smoothed-out" Invisibles. Many who may have been put off by the almost Burroughs-type behaviour of the Invisibles plotting will not have such a problem with Seven Soldiers. I think it can be enjoyed both by the Invisibles-wierdo type reader (like me!) and the more traditional comic reader. It just makes me so happy to pick up and read a comic like this.

I've always found it fascinating to imagine how a comic book author/illustrator creates the stories and images that appeal so much. Having been a non-fiction book author for many years, I have a firm understanding of the writing process. I sometimes pick out a few illustrations to put into a book. But building a story around the illustrations, that seems like a trip to the planet Neptune to me. I was very pleased to find that Scott McCloud is very good at explaining (and illustrating) the creative and production processes he uses. The final showdown of the Soul Society arc has arrived. Tensions heat up as Ichigo Kurosaki and Byakuya Kuchiki face off in an all out battle for SS! Meanwhile, elsewhere, Hitsugaya discovers the truth about a certain 'captain'.. One of my favorite volumes, which I think everyone should read!

Garth Ennis forewards this issue. He speaks of growing up with John Wayne and Clint Eastwood and of a long desire to add his own hero to the Western canon. In Saint of Killers he may just have managed to add a gunslinger who can stand toe to toe with them all. The first page of the elderly pizza owner recounting the tail - having grown apart from his hot shot lawyer son floored me. The other two character preludes were entertaining, but it's the saint, barrel still smoking that walked away with me after the last page.

i don't want to give anything away but if you have read earlier walking dead stories then you know things can only get worse. the optimism that the team share in this one is constantly overshadowed by the fear of their vulnerability. i actually had to put the book down half way through because i felt queasy! no doubt you should continue to read this great story. if only it didn't take one night to get through all those pages!
