I had known of this book for about a year when i finally decided to buy it. I was put off by the slightly dodgy artwork and the very serious nature of the plot which to me is not what comics are about. Anyway,I wanted to read it so i could come on hear and rant about how it is an over-rated waste of time but I cant. The art isnt perfect i agree but it has its charms and as you read the story you really do get into the simplistic nature of it,it works for this,it doesnt distract from the story which over stylised art would. The story is VERY well written and everything i read totally shocked and moved me.
The jist of my review is - if you are put off by the art but you liked schindlers list or have a fascination with hearing about the holocaust ... Read More:

Alan Moore is a creative genius. Yes, he does the superhero thing with Watchmen and his DC and Marvel forays, but this is a whole new spin on it! This graphic novel will make you want to re-read all those classics gathering dust on your shelves, because all of the major characters are torn from Victorian masterpieces. Allan Quartemain, Captain Nemo, The Invisible Man, Mina Murray (formerly Harker), Dr Jekyll and of course Mr Hyde are summoned to form the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. All the characters are well portrayed, especially Mr Hyde. But they all have flaws and dark sides. The Invisible Man is a rapist for instance, not your jolly scientist. You have all these classics in a James Bond-esque plot, spying for the Empire to save the world from a devious ... Read More:

This is a sad day for Rupert, Stuart Trotter's drawings are just not good enough after John Harrold's beautiful and detailed artwork. Harrold was a worthy successor to Tourtel and Bestall. I hope a new artist can be found to rescue Rupert, or bring back John Harrold.
In the meantime if you want to buy a great Rupert Annual for this Christmas get the 1963 facsimile produced this year and see just how enchanting a real Rupert Annual can be.

I only got this today, and having read about a third of the story, I can safely say that it is seriously good. Okay, so it's the first graphic novel I've ever read, but it does really make me want to buy more.

The story is very dark, and the inmates of the asylum (especially the Joker) are pretty damn scary. Although a bit confusing at first, the artwork is brilliant, although I'm still finding it hard to read what the Joker is saying in some panels.

Overall, really good. I would definitely recommend it.

I think that in his review the Kinniburgh Kid got it right. While there are times that this is very clever, even in a moral sense, there are moments when it goes over the line from subversive genius to bad taste. It has a very angry feel that the authors wanted this to be the end of the League and that they want to see how far they can push the story.

Towards the end there is a definite feeling that they are being pushed reluctantly into writing a sequel and that they want to make sure they don't have to do anymore!

For me the funniest things are the creatures of Dr Moreau which are quite brilliant and worth three stars on their own. I will never look at Rupert or The Wind in the Willows in quite the same way again.

There is one clear mistake ... Read More:

I was a late convert to the world of Buffy. Like many I had watched it as a teenager, enjoyed it, and then been persuaded by who knows who, that it was not something one should be proud of watching. Then I watched Serenity and thought it was great, backtracked to firefly and loved that too. Then one day somebody told me that the same guy that did those, did buffy. "WHAT!" I said, "That cant be!", half clouded by the fact that everybody said that Buffy was rubbish, half trying to cover up my embarrassment of not making this ling earlier.

So to cut a long story short, I watched all of Buffy in a very short time, and I loved it. And then I watched Angel and I loved it less, but loved it all the same.

Before Mr. Whedon ever entered my life, and then during, and ... Read More:

I'm not going to write a huge review of this here, suffice to say if you liked Long Halloween, Dark Victory, Haunted Knight, the Dark Knight Returns and all those sort of Batman stories you're in no way going to be disapointed by this. In fact you're probably going to love it. One of the greatest Batman stories out there. Be sure to read part 1 first!

Another decent addition to the Complete Judge Dredd collection - OZ was never one of my favourite storylines but it's still pretty entertaining. However, I must agree with the previous review, the cover is awful. Gone are the classy, simple, 2-tone covers of the previous 10 volumes. It it's place is this gaudy mess. What's a matter Rebellion, can't your art director choose more than 10 colours without running out of ideas? Do us a favour, buy him a Pantone book and go back to the earlier style.

As well as lots of nice old strips to satisfy the nostalgia freaks and comic historians - not to mention those who like a good laugh - this has the pleasant surprise of scans of original artwork showing how the artists finished their work in the days before computers. Brilliant!
