Brilliant. Just Brilliant. I've always loved the cartoons, but with this collection I got far more than I expected. As below, when I ordered this I was prepared for something slightly bigger than a DVD boxed set - what I got is a collection about A4 height (from there you can probably get an idea of scale from the picture supplied) and packed solid with cartoons. Apart from the obligatory Author's introduction, each page contains 4 regular strips or one large colour strip. The books are well finished and give the impression that, well treated, they will last a lifetime of reading. The paper is thick and durable, which adds to the weight of the collection but you won't be accidentaly tearing pages while flicking through. In fact, the whole thing ... Read More:

A year or so ago, my friend introduced me to Vampire Knight, and I used to read it online, but, when I found out it was out in book form, I bought 2 volumes of it. And of course, I still enjoyed every moment of it.

The basic setting is a boarding school (Cross Academy) attended by both humans and vampires (who, by the way, are not the undead, just a seperate species from us - also, their existence is a secret in this universe, like it is in most vampire novels). Vampires attend the Night Class, and humans attend the Day Class.

The Chairman of the academy, Kaien Cross, adopted a young girl called Yuuki 10 years ago, when she was left out in the freezing snow, and attacked by a crazed vampire - however, she was saved in the ... Read More:

More passionate that Women in Love, much deeper than Lady Chatterley, I think this is Lawrence's most successful novel. While ostensibly chronicling the moves from an agricultural to industrialised society, he plumbs the emotional depths of his characters. Frequently viewed as old-fashioned, Lawrence captures all the quivering, trembling, tentative life inside his characters and somehow paints it on the page. I first read this when I was seventeen just before going to university to read English and it left me blown away. I've since avaoided re-reading in case I'm disappointed, but have finally succumbed - and no, I'm not! Not a tube read as you need to concentrate and allow yourself to be sucked into its emotional depths but it's well worth it.

I like Frank Millers "Dark Knight Returns", and "The Dark Knight Strikes Again" is different but equally brilliant. The story brings in the whole DC universe, like Lex Luthor, Superman, Green Lantern and so on. But also less widely known like the Atom, Flash, Brainac, Captain Marvel, the Question, Wonder Woman and a new Supergirl. And the Bottle City of Kandor. I think all of this is very well done, especially as I read these comics as a child.

The graphics are splendid and done in Millers personal style, and worth checking out even if you're not totally into the superhero genre.

The story: Lex Luthor and Brainac have taken control of Earth and subdued the superheroes. And Batman rises against them.

No graphic novel collection is complete without some titles, like Watchmen, Knightfall, Sin City and Hellboy!!
I first started reading Hellboy before the first movie came out, I was curious, got one to try and now have them all (and the novels and figures and statues). Seed of Destruction is the first in the series and it jumps straight in to Hellboys life in the B.P.R.D. (bereau for paranormal resreach and defense, kind of like a supernatural CIA). You just see he is a demon working for the agency, and he has a cool coat and a massive stone hand. But as the story goes on, you find he was summoned by Nazis and Ra ra rasputin to help win WW2. But he was saved by Proff. Bruttenholm and now fights for the good guys! Along with Abe Sapien (fish guy) and Liz (Fire starter!). ... Read More:

Yes men of a certain age (I don't think many girls read these or the Commando books) will know what to expect here and wallow in the nostalgia. Thankfully not processed to be PC - they are of their time and therefore serve a historical purpose as well as being great entertainment. I was regalling my son only a couple of weeks ago of how I would wait for the War and Battle picture libraries Summer specials to take on holidays and how they would hold me enthralled for hours and of course we all were able to go out and fight pretend battles of our own. I prefferred these comics to the slightly more staid Commando books but devour all of them as well as the weekly doses of Victor, Hotspur and the Eagle.

Ah those were the days....and by the way my son loves these as well. Achtung Schweinhund! ... Read More:
