I loaned this book from my library when I first started learning C, without it I would have simply given up.
It goes through all the basic steps, compiling your hello world program through to structures and the even the feared 'pointer' was a piece of cake. Trust me, this will be your first book to teach you the basics then you can go onto the more intermediate user books like 'The C programming Language' and become a true C master
May the code be with you :)

I went from Agnostic to Convert in one easily understood book. I have gone from being a competent procedural programmer who dabbled in objects, to being a staunch advocate of PHP objects and patterns.

If you don't quite get what the OOP fuss is about, read this book and you won't look back. You'll start every sentence with "code to an interface, not an implementation"

On the second chapter in this book it refers to information you must download to be able to use the remainder of the book. It has links to the information that do not work and searching for the information produces no clear result. The book is a failure and has wasted a lot of my precious time.

I already new a little about CSS design before reading this book but wanted a book that would give me a good knowledge of the fundamentals. This book was very easy to read (even made me laugh a few times), will give you a great base knowledge setting you up to delve further if you want to.

This is a fair thick volume containing a wealth of knowledge regarding SQL server. Much of the work and example are specific to MS SQL Server 2005, but where this is the case it is clearly pointed out, often with examples to achieve the same effect in previous version given. That said much of the theory (specifically in the initial chapters of the book) are more general and can be applied across all major relational database implementing SQL.

The author is clearly an expert in the field.

The book does contain a chapter on Optimising SQL queries, however it is fairly sparse and should not be used as much more than an introduction and "a few pointers" on what to look for when one begins optimisation.
I look forward to reading "Inside Microsoft® ... Read More:

178.Haskell: The Craft of Functional Programming (International Computer Science Series) by: Simon Thompson

Books : Haskell: The Craft of Functional Programming (International Computer Science Series)
I hated the book more than I hated Haskell!

My first impression of the book was positive, the chapters looked organised and the language used looked very clear.

However, as the term went on I began using the book less and less as I felt alot of stuff in the book hadn't been explained very well.

If you are new to games programming then this is a book for you.

Each chapter has a different games to create or try-out (with the complete code on the enclosed CD just in case).

As you would expect each game is more complex to create than the last one, but the book contains very detailed explanations on why certain keys are used or objects included.

Those who are more familiar with the basics of game programming will still probably find the "game maker" engine extremely useful and perhaps better than some others on the market.

Only downside is that the enclosed game maker engine is not a registered version, and costs around £10 to convert it to the latest version.

Overall the book is a very good guide to games programming.

This book is very thorough and probably a great reference but if you want to get up and running asap then this isn't the book to choose. The bulk of the "code" consists merely of function prototypes which I can't see the point of at all. There is virtually no sample code that shows how something practical might be achieved so maybe buy this book if you're starting to get heavily into WCF - but not when you're starting off.
