In 2001, I was working for an investment bank in London where I was trying to come up with a consistent framework for my Excel models as applied to everyday corporate finance issues. My boss showed me this book he'd recently purchased in the High Street that set out a standardised methodology for developing models and unleashing the power of Excel. This book was Day's first edition and I had to have it but for some reason it slipped off my book purchase list. Try as I might, I was unable to find a copy these last six years (mainly because I'd forgotten the title & author!!). OK...received the book this morning so I haven't really read through it yet. It has a lot of pages!! ermm its very thick...looks impressive. What else? ermmmm its a reference book for more advanced use of Excel, so really its a 'no brainer'...any book would do.

This book avoids most of the pitfalls of Ed Haletky's work. It has been properly proof-read, edited and is not as dry. McCain comes across an accomplished technical author and makes good use of visuals to explain the concepts he's introducing, an area where I felt the Haletky text was lacking. McCain also has a knack of making obscure concepts accessible using straightforward and readily understood examples. The explanation of virtual networking is particularly good and the author clears up some of the fog surrounding ESX and the iSCSI protocol, especially the need for service console and VMkernel ports. I found this extremely helpful in helping me master the fundamental principles of JAVA. Head First specialise in creating a visual learning experience. This might at first seem strange but once you get used to it, you see the value and begin to wish more people made it this easy. Recommend.

Here is an area where the old school of design still lingers, the book is very suitable for specific tasks but really needs improving on. Having said that I threw away my copy of Charlotte Baden-Powell's book as soon as I got this - because even this tome is much more useable than hers.
