Having read quite a few very average books lately I am relieved to say that finally I found a good one! I was fed up of starting these mediocre books, reading 200 or so pages and not really caring what happened, so I was delighted to discover this one, where from the very beginning I was desperate to know what happened.
As for all the negative comments about the ending being a disappointment and far fetched, I don't agree at all. I thought the ending was good, the whole plot was excellent, although I did have an inkling about one of the "baddies", that is, the one revealed in the final twist. Apart from the thrilling climax, it was a great read throughout, with an intriguing mystery and plenty suspense. I loved it and would definitely ... Read More:

I was hoping to find something of use in Twiggy's book - but it's nothing but a random, waffly set of anecdotes with lots of advertisements for products and clothes shops. If you're looking for real advice - about what suits your shape, what colours to wear past a certain age, some thoughts on styles - look somewhere else.

I returned my copy, because I was so disappointed - and thumbs up to Amazon for letting me!

This terrific follow-up to The Lincoln Lawyer, featuring troubled defense lawyer Mickey Haller, also includes famed police detective Hieronymous (Harry) Bosch, who has been a hero in thirteen previous Connelly mysteries. Though Haller and Bosch work on opposite sides (one on defense and one on prosecution) and even live on opposite sides of the bay, they are thrown together against their wills and must cooperate if they are going to see justice served. Haller has just returned to law practice after a hiatus in which he has dealt with his demons and his addictions, the result of a long, painful hospitalization and several complex surgeries after he was "gut shot."

Haller has inherited the entire caseload of former prosecutor Jerry ... Read More:

This book is split into chapters based on the traditional school subjects, such as geography, history, maths, and then within each chapter split into 'typical things we were taught', ranging from the list of British kings to trigonometry to Charles Dickens.

There are certain chapters you'll skip, either because they were your specialist subject at university or because you're still not interested years later. But there are chapters you'll definitely be saying "I used to know that!" for.

It doesn't take very long to read the entire book, but that's only half the usefulness, because my copy will be taking a prominent place on my shelf- because next time anything that relates to these subjects comes up, I'll remember (I ... Read More:

A fascinating insight into the mind of a TV writer. I hadn't realised that RTD worked so hard - heavily rewriting almost everyone's scripts (apart from Steven Moffat's) including the much lauded Human Nature/Family of Blood.

What I also found interesting about this collection of emails between RTD and Benjamin Cook is that it could almost be said that RTD was using the exchange as therapy - who could have thought that the talking head crying "Marvelous!" and "Hooray!" during Doctor Who Confidential was so wracked with self doubt and self criticism during the creative process? Whatever you may personally think about the episodes he wrote, reading this will give you massive respect for the man.

Despite Russell's disclaimers ... Read More:

I was so looking forward to a good historical novel but what a let down. It was more like text book. Dreadfully hard going - I didn't finish it.

The story in Anathem takes place on a kind of alternative earth ("Arbre") where sholars ("Avouts") have sealed themselves off in closterlike milieus ("Concent") from the outside society ("The Saecular"). We soon learn that this has gone on for thousands of years, and that civilisation has developed, flourished and degenerated several times. Only on very rare occasions ("Apert") do the doors to the Concents for ten days and it's maths open for the saeculars. We follow fraa Erasmas, a young avout in the Concent of Saunt Edhard in year 3689, after the so called Reconstitution, awaiting the new Apert when he will meet his family for the first time in ten years. The scope widens as several avouts are called on by the Saecular to help solve a problem or crisis. And a ... Read More:

This book has been written in the sense of a dialogue between master and disciple reminicent of the Corpus Hermeticum. However in this case the reader may or may not find these imposed questions useful or, indeed annoying... This is a book which is either going to hit a chord, or will seem like utter nonsense. From my point of view as an average reader, I have found it very important because it explores concepts of this mind/ego (a double) which is inside of each person which needs confronting in someway. I think this book is must read for anyone who feels they are on a spiritual path, because fundementally (and in my limited understanding) the awareness of the 'double' and the fission of dark and light is inevitable along this path. If this is really the case, then this book ... Read More:

Very funny and surprisingly informative. Coren is a wonderful writer and a lot of what he has to say is intelligent and genuinely interesting as well as funny. Well recommended.
