I love DK eye witness normally...but I fell into a trap on this one..Look at the publish date - feb 2004. It's over 4 years out of date now - I rely on these guides for hotel/restaurant information. In 4 years much can happen. I appreciate that much of the information is still extremely relevant(hence 3 stars) but disapponited these guides are not updated yearly.

We used this guide when we travelled to New York with our 2 year old a couple of months ago. It was invaluable. The best thing about it were the accurate descriptions and recommendations. The downfall of many a Guide book is when you turn up somewhere and it's either not there or its nothing like the description. It is doubly important that this doesn't happen when there are children involved and this book didn't let us down once the entire week. The book has great sections on where to find local playgrounds and child orientated spins on all the major tourist sites. It's an excellent overview and it's not as in-depth as some of the study books on my list I've been reading throughout my first two years studying Egyptology. Would be an excellent book for someone who wanted an introduction into Ancient Egyptian History, it has some lovely detailed maps included. It makes an excellent edition to my little Egyptian library, which now stands at nearly 1000 books on this subject. :-)

If you want bad advice written by people who sound like they went around rubbing all Floridians up the wrong way read this. I made the mistake of booking some of the hostels listed in here only to arrive at my destination to discover that I could not have picked a grottier rip off to stay in. Luckily I had researched my destination independently and so only a few nights were spoilt by the advice in this lonely planet. The prices are very inaccurate and the advice it gives about the friendliness of people is utter rubbish. Miami and Key West were just two of the places that this Lonely Planet writer said the people were unfriendly in and that proved to be completely false. My advice would be to take everything in this guide with a pinch of salt ... Read More:

Whether you're exploring Lanzarote in a hire car, on foot or by bike it's incredibly useful - and we loved the fact that it refused to fall apart, no matter how badly we treated it! All we took with us to plan our trip was this and the Rough Guide (Lanzarote Directions by Emma Gregg) - which is brilliant too - and we had a great time, with lots of off-the-beaten-track adventures!
