Back in '96 I deployed my first Lonely Planet in the Pacific Northwest United States. Later that same year I had a meeting in Washington DC and managed a whirlwind tour of the monuments around the National Mall and a very short visit to the Air and Space Museum. I was so knocked out I swore I'd go back, and when I finally did I was equipped with the obligatory LP.

This book, in fact, helped me cover more ground than I could reasonably have expected in two days. This timetable unfortunately prohibited any experimentation with the beguiling night attractions described - maybe next time! - but it helped me do justice to the splendour of the Mall at last, and to find my way round efficiently (also aided, I will admit, by MapEasy's ... My partner borrowed this and "Rough Guide to California". Look up that book - 100 times better than this and I am a Lonely Planet fan (South East Asia on a Shoe String, Oz, New Zealand, South America on a Shoe String).

We travelled from LA to San Francisco to Vegas via all the main sites. We found little practical information in this book (considering its purpose) - for example, there is half a page dedicated to what to do if you see a celebrity in LA and about the same on the southern LA coast and places to see there.

Other areas it lacked were suggested routes around, itineraries, history, places to stay and eat (I don't rely on these books but they are often a good starting point when you don't have the internet with ... Read More:

We used this guide when we travelled to New York with our 2 year old a couple of months ago. It was invaluable.
The best thing about it were the accurate descriptions and recommendations. The downfall of many a Guide book is when you turn up somewhere and it's either not there or its nothing like the description. It is doubly important that this doesn't happen when there are children involved and this book didn't let us down once the entire week.

The book has great sections on where to find local playgrounds and child orientated spins on all the major tourist sites. The restaurant section is particularly good, recommending a couple of places that I would never have thought of going but had both excellent food and that were ... Read More:

At a scale of 1:50000 this is the same as the Ordnance Survey Landranger series. In other words, this is a map for walkers and cyclists. If you are only going to drive, then you can pick up a free road map at the tourist information office in the airport, that will show you everything you will need. This map is detailed and mostly accurate, and the street plans of the main towns are quite useful. However, there is a lot of new building work going on in Fuerteventura, and some new roads and "urbanizations" were not on the map at all. It's printed on ordinary paper that will tear easily. By the way, the map is German, published by Kompass-Karten of Innsbruck. The AA just re-badge it. You may find the same map from a number of different distributors.

Books : The Unofficial Guide to Las Vegas 2008 (Unofficial Guides)
Bob Sehlinger has a great writing style which is witty and amusing; this book is fact filled and very interesting. Bob and his team have certainly left no stone unturned in this epic guide book about one of the greatest playgrounds on earth - 'Las Vegas'.

I also loved his 'Unoffical Guide to Walt Disney World' and knew that this guide would also quench my thirst. The book gives comprehensive information about all things Vegas from hotels ranked and rated, top running shows, the best buffets, top tips and gaming advice together with quirky facts. All this and more is covered along with the usual 'guide book facts'.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is usually bored by mundane guide book repetition as this book breaks ... Read More:
