Lonely Planet has finally got its act together and upgraded the badly flawed and messy 1st edition of its traveller's guide to Crete. The 1st edition while 75% there just had too many inaccuracies and inconsistencies to be considered a good guide: directions were often 180 degrees out, maps were incorrect, recommendations were strangely pitched at travellers with more money than taste and that front cover ...urrgh!

All that has changed with the new edition of the Crete guide, published in February 2002. This book, after an initial review by this critic, is a stunner and a winner. With a striking Minoan fresco painting as a front cover the book looks immediately tight and controlled. The two new special sections on the 'Minoans' and ... Read More:

The author narrates and analyses the situation leading up to the invasion, the fighting itself, the decisions (in indecision) by the senior New Zealand commanders which led to the Allied withdrawal and the withdrawal itself. Other than an epilogue of stories of individuals, he ends his narrative there. The style is similar to Barbarossa (another of Clark's books) with a concentration on operational and command aspects rather than the emphasis on individual experiences and anecdotes favoured by several more modern popular historians. He seems particularly good on naval aspects.

He concentrates on the British and ANZAC experience with relatively little attention given to the Greeks and Germans. His limited analysis of the disastrous ... Read More:

Search : The Island
I began reading The Island as part of a book group choice, but failed to make it past the halfway mark. Hislop has the bones of an interesting novel here, but she has thrown it away with her amateurish writing. She must be connected in the publishing world, because most editors would have decimated a draft of this quality. A similar manuscript from an unknown novelist would probably have languished forever in the agent/publisher's slush pile. The characters are undeveloped; some of the dialogue is risible; character viewpoints are switched at random, but not in a way which leaves the reader confident that the author is doing it for a purpose.

What I find staggering is that, following its recommendation by Richard and Judy, this is now a best ... Read More:

Well, it is not a bad book, but I had some problems to read it all and I admit that I skipped some bits here and there. This is not something I usually do, especially in Osprey Campaign books which are short (96 pages) par principle. But this time I really had to. And when I tried to read it again a couple of moths later, well, I got the same result.
So what is the problem? I would say that the writing is somehow "uninspired" - even boring by moments. The description of the battle is a little bit confused, and the maps are average - it is not always easy to follow the events. The colour plates are not bad, but the style is not so much about details - I would say it is rather more "impressionist" by moments. Not my favourite, but this is a question ... Read More:
