As a Cretan, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author has a deep and genuine understanding of the Cretan spirit and the idiosyncracies of the various characters; even when at times he must have felt totally (and rightly) exasperated, he writes always from the perspective of one who understands and ultimately loves, and never rises to cheap-shot caricaturisation. Every word has the feel of authenticity. Laugh-aloud humour, pathos, lyricism -this book has it all. Enjoy!

Yes, they are a good poolside read, but they are also ideal for people who want to get off the tourist trail and into the culture and landscape a little deeper than the "get the train from and stay in" type guide. I think this latter approach can lead to people missing out on true travel experiences in favour of going where all the other backpackers go. Certainly that has been my experience and I now prefer talking to people along the way rather than following a pre-set menu.
