This must rank as one of the great missed opportunities of the thriller genre. Burke has already written a series of thrillers set in New Orleans, starring his cop Robicheaux. Along comes Hurricane Katrina. Surely it's a slam dunk to write about that?

It all goes horribly wrong. Firstly, there is actually little description of the hurricane or its' trail of destruction - certainly nothing that would surprise anyone who saw television footage (which is everyone). Secondly, what description there is lacks the immediacy and intimacy that would bring a huge disaster down to an understandable and human scale. Thirdly, most of the book isn't even set in New Orleans.

Added to this, are the usual Burke problems. The several ... Read More:

The latest installment in the Lincoln Rhyme series, 'The Broken Window' is a case a little closer to home in that it involves a close relation being the main (if not only suspect) in a murder.
Rhyme quickly deduces that this is the work of a master criminal who's MO includes making sure he has a fall guy set up. 'The Broken Window' is fascinating in terms of the realism of the world it describes, with the whole big brother fear brought to the forefront. The tendency to this means there is less high octane, heart pounding tension of the previous books in the series.

Definitely worth reading for hardcore fans or first timers alike though I suggest the later start with the older books first for some background. At the very least I suggest ... Read More:

Yay... I've read a book without dr who in it... quite an achievement :-)

In most circumstances I'd be left with a feeling of "yes... and...?" if a tale finished like this one did... but strangely enough I don't... it is closed... even though it is totally left unfinished... very weird you get this build up of intensity and pace throughout as the plot twists and mysteries deepen... and then towards the end it kind of slows down, almost like thought processes as you realise you might not actually want to resolve things...

It's an unusal journey for a character... and as I say is pretty much left unresolved... there are still loads of questions about Oedipa and what happens next... but that's right... there should be no resoltuion...

I was so excited when I picked this up - it reminded me of Martina Cole in her early days. The book didn't disappoint, I couldn't put it down. There were lots of twists and it wasn't at all predictable. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait for her next one. If you like Martina Cole, you'll like this.

Dr. Claire Elliot moved to quiet Tranquility, Maine with her rebellious teenage son Noah after the death of her husband. She takes over a small medical practice and starts to rebuild her life, but after only being in town for a short while, strange things start happening among the town's youth. Teenage pranks rapidly accelerate into a shooting spree at the local school. Clare wonders why some of the town's residents want to cover up the incidents and she also wonders if there might be a medical explanation for everything that is going on. Then folks start blaming her for what's happening and it looks like they want to drive her out of town.

Convinced that there's a medical reason for the evil behavior of the town's teenagers, Claire chases after every clue she can ... Read More:

This, along with the Blood Brothers are the 1st books I've picked up by Nora Roberts and my honest opinion is WHY? I found I couldn't put them down, usually I take approx 1wk per book, read both of these within this time limit, I just can't wait for part 3. I'm not a hardened thriller reader and I suspect if you are, these are light reading for you, however I found myself absorbed and there is a love story thrown in for good measure. Excellent.

First one of This guys books, but after reading it I'll be looking to go back to the start of the series.

Found it very entertaining with some imaginative ideas that were convincing and grabbed your attention. The characters were well written and you could travel with them through the story immediately... I didn't even realise this was part of a series of books with the same character until I was almost at the end and went looking for more of the authors books... It stands up great on its own.

Overall very enjoyable and everything I needed out of a thriller.

The one redeeming feature of this book is probably that it made Mr. Brown enough money to pay for some airline tickets so he could actually visit the places he wants to write about. Other than that, this one should have been printed on toilet paper. That way it would at least have served a useful purpose.
Mr. Brown shows he understands the craft of writing books but that is not the same as saying this one is actually worth reading. It took me all of 10 seconds to realize that ndakota was an anagram of tankado and anybody with a smidgen of high school physics knows that uranium has two major isotopes, U235 and U238. This makes me smarter than all the geeks in the NSA crypto department if we were to believe Mr. Brown. Some other things that bothered me were:
1)The murders in the book were ... Read More:
