It's hard to understand how a novelist can deteriorate as much from his early novels as this. This is an adequate pot-boiler of the kind you might pick up at random from the top 10 in any bookshop. But when compared with Goddard's best books, such as Take No Farewell and Into the Blue, it's almost as though it is written by a different author.
Where is all the period detail, character and emotional tension Goddard used to put into his books? Where is even one decent twist? Hayley Winter, to take just one example, is a cardboard character, who alternately acts out some old-man's fantasy and behaves, absurdly, as the greenest of journalists. The twist was ridiculously obvious virtually from the start. Then there is the sloppy, poor writing, ... Read More:

Whenever I pick up a Lee Child book I know I'm in for a great ride of a story and this did not disappoint. Yes, you can spot the twist and you know how it's going to end but still I couldn't put it down. Fantastic and highly recommended.

It was a really good read and kept me interested but you felt the ending was too quickly wrapped up. The serial killer who thought of everything didn't have a paasword on the home computer that contained incriminating evidence.
Also the fact that the hookers seem to know who the creeper was but wouldn't say anything. That part of the story didn't ring through very well. Other than that it was well worth a read and I will track down her other novels.

Im a fan of the whole halo series not just the games, so this book was a must for me.
Set before any of the other books or games, in short, the book is based around Sergant Johnson, who is right on the front line of the insurrection, a human civil war. He is then reasigned to the planet Harvest to train recruits. This is then the 1st planet the covenant attack.
It starts slow and you have to stick with it until it picks up pace. When the book gets into it, its an addictive read, and i felt had alot of depth to it, espeically near the end.
Its a great addition to the halo series and its nice to have a good idea of the games or other books as you find out the origin of certain things, but its by no means vital.

I'm a great Deaver fan but was glad of a break from Lincoln Rhyme - I find the Rhyme books can be a bit claustrophic.

I have just finished The Sleeping Doll and it stands alone as being an excellent, very satisfying read - a riveting good story and I would certainly recommend it. (To be quite honest I preferred this book to Deaver's latest The Broken Window.)

Don't be put off by unfavourable reviews !!!

Lieutenant Charles Acland has returned from Iraq with severe head and face injuries and a predilection for sudden rages particularly against women. Three men are killed in London and Acland seems implicated. Walter's compelling exploration of estrangement and psychological chaos owes much to the presence of one of her best characters ever, Jackson, the weight lifting locum G.P. who moonlights as a bouncer at her girlfriend's pub and befriends Acland when he precipates an unnecessary brawl. A monumental `saviour' of near mythic competence, Jackson ironically begins to question Acland's social isolation and sexual anxiety. `He squinted up at her. From the floor she looked like a mountain of white muscle, with calves, thighs, shoulders and neck bulging out ... Read More:

There is no questioning that this is an improbable plot but this is a brilliant book that will keep you turning the pages. Its fast-paced, unputdownable, gripping and addictive and you will not want to put this one down until you have finished. Mr Archer at his best.

The long awaited sequel in Thomas Lynley's arduous life has been sadly all too disappointing. I was dismayed that the normal twists and turns and interaction Elizabeth George usually gives us were just not evident. I was greatly upset by her portrayal of the local Cornish constabulary as 'yokel thickos' which is insulting in its implication and I know from experience they are not. Her choice of rediculous names for the characters was too unbelievable and the reality of life in Cornwall is nothing like she has portrayed. There are so many crime writers who's information on the jacket states that they may be of British origin but usually end up living over the 'pond'. I find most of them in time lose the 'Britishness' in their writing and small anomalies creep in to their work ... Read More:
