171.Compulsion by: Jonathan Kellerman
July 03, 2008
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Books : Compulsion
I thought Kellermann's last offerings had been a bit bland but he is back on form with compulsion. Again Milo and Alex are on the trace of a psychopath but there are some interesting variations in the killings. Yet again they jump at a conclusion that turns out to be true and then the book turns into a really well written police procedural with Alex Delaware as investigator. This makes very entertaining reading and shows Kellermann at the height oh his profession. Very readable, very enjoyable.

I was introduced to The Woman in Black by my mother who took me for a birthday treat to see the long running west end show. I was hooked. For anyone who is thinking of seeing a truly memorable play in London, this is the one. It is done with the bare minimum of props and set design, so allowing your imagination to completely take over, which it does. It is completely spine-chilling and unforgettable. Go and see it!

Loved it!

Locked-In Syndrome...what a sinister and disabling thing to do to someone. Aren't we all slightly freaked by the idea of being so helpless we can only blink? The way Mark writes Alison's character conveys her frustration as well as the humour she manages to hang on to. I really liked his characters and having read Scaredy Cat (his second novel featuring Detective Thorne) before this one, I'm now looking forward to reading his others in the right order.

After a long time of not having picked up a book by John Grisham, an author who probably suffers from overkill, I found this to be a pleasurable - and at the same time, a disturbingly unpleasurable - read. The story centres around Ron Williamson, a former baseball player with a reputation for drinking and womanising: not the most sympathetic character. Yet, Grisham turns out an engaging work of journalism.

My one criticism is that it does seem one-sided, with Grisham carrying out a hatchet job (if you pardon the pun) on many members of the Oklahama police, judiciary, etc for their part in Williamson's wrongful conviction. Grisham is probably right that Ron Williamson is a victim of an horrendous injustice. Unfortunately, we do not know because ... Read More:

When I read the first in the Bolitar series, I thought to myself - there's no way he can keep this going for so long.

Well, here we are at book four and we're still going strong. The Bolitar style - quick, prankish and often a little silly (Myron doesn't ever seem to let himself take things seriously), this series continues to surprise and delight.

As always, there's multiple strands to the story that keep you transfixed and a cast of well realised characters that make the mystery more plausible. You think you've got it figured out when suddenly Coben drags you off the other way, demonstrating that your perceived cleverness was just him taking you right where he wanted you to go.

For fans, there's plenty of story on Esperanza ... Read More:

This is a strong deviation from the Parker series focusing on Louis and Angel who up to now have been supporting characters.
Connolly's style of writing is accomplished - it is rich, visual and poetic - and conveys the dark and disturbing world that his characters are set within. He has also expertly brought a strong human element to Louis and Angel so that you are on their side and sympathetic to them although they too are assassins - albeit for the greater good in the present day.
The plot has been explained well by other reviewers - all that I can add to that is that the pace is strong throughout. You may miss Parker in this novel but it's to Connolly' credit that he can create a strong thriller using supporting characters. Robert Crais also successfully deviated ... Read More:

I have read every one of the Inspector Banks novels in order. I am now up to Aftermath and this proves that the series is going from strength to strength. The early novels were short but later they have become more in depth with character development.
The first chapter could easily be the last chapter of many a crime novel.
A neighbour reports a domestic in a neighbour's house. Two constables respond to this and stumble upon the home of the Chameleon a serial killer that Yorkshire police have been chasing for months. The killer Payne has knocked his wife Lucy unconscious. He attacks the constables and kills one but the other constable manages to knock him unconscious.

The remainder of the story is the aftermath for those involved.
Banks has to make sense ... Read More:

A prostitute is murdered on the steps of her apartment, in a run down area of Atlanta, and Detective Michal Ormewood is sent to the scene. The police soon discover that there have been a number of recent, similiar attacks, although not always fatal, involving younger victims. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation send one of their agents, Will Trent, who has been investigating these similiar crimes, to assist the Atlanta Police Department with their investigation.

I found this book an engrossing read. There is always something going on in it, that makes you want to read on. The characters in it have depth, and personality, which makes you care about them, when they are in perilious situations. There is a bit of jumping backwards and forwards at the beginning of the novel, but ... Read More:

Peculiarly written, odd story, I gave up after forcing myself to read about five chapters which is very out of character for me, but I just couldn't bear to continue!

Im a fan of the whole halo series not just the games, so this book was a must for me.
Set before any of the other books or games, in short, the book is based around Sergant Johnson, who is right on the front line of the insurrection, a human civil war. He is then reasigned to the planet Harvest to train recruits. This is then the 1st planet the covenant attack.
It starts slow and you have to stick with it until it picks up pace. When the book gets into it, its an addictive read, and i felt had alot of depth to it, espeically near the end.
Its a great addition to the halo series and its nice to have a good idea of the games or other books as you find out the origin of certain things, but its by no means vital.
:)
