'Black Market' (also known as Black Friday) is one of the first of James Patterson's many novels, originally published back in 1986. The story begins in the early hours of a cold December day in New York City where several of the biggest banks and investment and financial buildings on Wall Street are blown up by a terrorist organisation called The Green Band, a highly skilled group of Vietnam veterans who have a personal vendetta against the United States and plan to attack in one of the worst ways possible, by causing a complete financial crash where literally billions of dollars will be lost. FBI agent Archer Carroll and Wall Street lawyer Caitlin Dillon are on the case to find out the identities and the motive behind Green Band's terrorist acts. ... Read More:

I am putting the same review on this book and Scarrow's latest one in the series, "Centurion". Now this one is poor; poorly written, bog-standard charactarisation and ho-hum action scenes, but...

By the time you get to "Centurion" we have an author who has settled into his style, still basic, but eminently readable, with the author's research and expertise in the subject lightly spread amongst the plot and the expansion of the major characters into almost loveable specimens.

So for those of you reading this review in "Under the Eagle" stick with this series, it gets way better.

I picked this up in my local Tesco the other day, thought it looked intriguing but although it was nicely written it failed to excite me. I thought the early part about Kate and her detective agency was quite funny, and perceptive, the eyes of a child were well depicted, but when it moved into the present day I lost interest really. Skipped some of it to get to the end to find out what actually happened to Kate and Adrian, average book.

I loved the Ladies No. 1 Detective Agency series when it first appeared, but like so many things in life, as I read further entries in the series, they grew progressively less enchanting. Perfectly fun and readable, but somewhat familiar and no longer greatly anticipated, until I stopped after the fifth. Needing something fairly simple for short a car ride, I picked up the audio version of this eighth in the series, and revisited the familiar characters and their beloved Botswana.

This installment features three separate cases for the detective agency, all of which underscore the book's (and series') main theme: personal relationships. Mma. Ramotswe is asked by a distant relative to investigate the mysterious deaths of three patients at the hospital he ... Read More:

I am not usually inclined to write reviews for books but this one left me seething so I felt obliged!

Firstly, as mentioned in other reviews here this is only half a story so prepare to feel cheated when you get to the end. On the positive side of course once you know this you won't make the mistake of buying the second/third book!

Secondly, the plot and hard to know where to begin really. The whole thing is complete nonsense - I know it is fiction and fantasy on the author's part but it just goes to far. The whole book seems to consist of putting unlikely characters in impossible situations then inventing machines or tools which "magically" appear at the 11th hour just in time to save them from their impending doom. The kind of thing you come ... Read More:

Having read two of the Thursday Next books (and about to start my third), I'd just like to say that I agree with some of the points raised about characterisation being a little one-dimensional at times. However, I think that doesn't detract from the overall fun and flavour of the book(s) at all. I'm having a whale of a time in Jasper's world! The quirkiness is just right because there are enough real-world analogies to hang onto. Anyone know where I can get a re-engineered thylacine?

Great if you're in the mood for an easy-to-read, fast-paced novel for a flight or train journey. But don't expect a flawless plot and in-depth characters.

SPOILER - Is it me, or was the protagonist only a BMW dealer so he could have easy access to a car at the end of the novel? I swear there was no other reason.

Well, i can't believe she's done it again!
Lora Leigh just keeps on bringing out amazing books and amazing series..

This book was so full of emotion and hot love scenes that its definately going on my keeper shelf.
I would recommended this book, and this author to anyone who loves a romance, hot love scenes, humor and action.

One tip i would offer to newcomers to this author, is that as previous reviewers have stated this series/book is a take off from the SEALS series. Nearly all SEALS characters re-appear in this book, as well as you were introduced to Nathan in the second book of the series Hidden Agendas, while his is captured.
Therefore i would recommended to read this SEALS series prior to starting this one, as characters do develop ... Read More:

It's become quite popular, it seems. Going back in time. Reviewing beginnings. Take Smallville, the early years of Superman. Or Enterprise, the pre-Shatner Star Trek universe. And then there's Casino Royale, the Bond movies going back to his early Secret Service days. Here, Lee Child does something similar with his hero, telling us about Jack Reacher's time in the Army - at the beginning of the 1990s, as the Berlin Wall started coming down - before he became a rootless civilian.

We get the usual clipped prose leavened with irony and wit. Reacher is a hard man and doesn't like bad people. So when he finds himself mysteriously re-assigned out of Panama to a relative backwater, he starts asking questions - until he is called out to investigate the apparent natural death ... Read More:
