Books : Discrete Mathematics with Applications (Mathematics)
Thanks to this book, I have learned the essential mathematics for computer science degree. The text is easy to understand and written better than any discrete mathematics book. Good examples and lots of exercises to help you to learn the logic and proofs involved. The examples are easy to follow, step by step and i would recommend for those who stuggle with discrete mathematics.

I haven't looked at maths since I was around 17 in school, I am now 25 entering postgraduate studies in computer science. I have worked as a programmer for some years. I do not rate myself as a strong mathematician, and I have found this book easy to follow, and rewarding.

It does not presuppose any more than a basic mathematical grounding, starting with fairly basic reminders such as "recall that an integer is even if it is twice some integer" and quickly progressing on to more advanced topics, which are all explained one step at a time, introducing new concepts and reinforcing previously introduced ones.

Contrary to other reviews, there *are* in fact answers in the back to every other question. Each section ends ... Read More:

Overview (I.M.H.O)

This book is carefully written, serious mathematical textbook that is written to slip `traditionally difficult' Mathematical skills under your `Radar' disguised as fun things to read and do. The book can be seen from several levels for a wider potential audience. To me, its starts as if its designed to increase the mathematical skills in Computer Science students, and ends as a book for the more mathematical inclined. In no time, the tougher supporting mathematical justifications are to help the reader conceptual grasp. I bought this with a short-term special offer from amazon.com AND favorable exchange rates for a nice price. the book is printed on excellent paper and will last a long time.

I bought this book on recommendation from an associate who is trying to use it to make a software model for UK Horse Racing. Given that I use a home-brewed software model for myself which used advanced calculus techniques to process all the data points I thought that I would read this book to compare notes and to see if the author has something that we could employ.

Sadly not. The most interesting part of the book is the description of Jai Alai (the Basque sport which is played on an overstretched squash court and with baskets on the players' arms to catch and fling the ball back).

The description of that sport is brilliant and I learned something new. However, the rest of the book is a disappointment.

An excellent introduction to the subject, even if your maths is a bit rusty. The book takes an engineering approach and seems to be designed to get you quickly to the point where you can solve your own problems. This makes the examples a bit narrow though. Supplying code in C, PASCAL, FORTRAN and BASIC was a nice touch.
