I have been a fan of the Eyewitness Travel guides for a number of years; their emphasis on a visual format (especially their cutaway diagrams of selected sights) is extremely useful, while their recommendations of restaurants, pubs, and shops have never steered me wrong. I have found this to be true time and again when I have taken it to Dublin, where the guide really opened up the city for me to explore it. While much of the information within this guide is also contained within the larger Ireland (Eyewitness Travel Guide), it should be pointed out that they are NOT the same. The Ireland guide does contains most of the same information, but the Dublin guide provides more details and some additional sites that were left out of the ... Read More:

I've looked at all the available self teaching books and cd's and found this one to be the clearest and simple to use. The book is great with very clear pictures and virtually every common situation is covered. I would have given 5 stars if it hadn't been for a couple of 'not so clear' pronunciations from the included cd's but overhaul it's the best starter pack out there so if you're wanting to get cracking with the language for the first time then don't hesitate and start here... good luck...

I've looked at all the available self teaching books and cd's and found this one to be the clearest and simple to use. The layout of the Eyewitness Travel Guides is outstanding; they separate cities by areas and color code each area, with tabs on the side of the book to make the area easy to find. There is a map of all the central color coded areas on the inside of the front cover, and inside the back cover, a more complete map of the region. Each chapter is a "color", covering Back Bay and South End, Beacon Hill and West End, North End and the Waterfront, Old Boston and Financial District, and Chinatown and the Theater District. There is a final "Farther Afield" chapter that covers Cambridge, the JFK Library and Museum, as well as his birthplace, which is a fascinating, small house in Brookline, the Museum of Fine Arts, the U.S.S. This is based on an Italian publication so there's really no excuse. It also doesn't tell you how to get from the airport to Palermo. The photos are ok though.
