I've been a Lakeland enthusiast for quite a number of years, but it was only on my most recent trip that I was in a bookshop and noticed seven little white books... everywhere. I didn't really think much of it, until I was bought one for my birthday - book seven. It had the Great Gable walk in it, a mountain which I still haven't found the time to climb, but I'll get round to it.

I read it from cover to cover - unusual, considering it's a guidebook, and was immediately hooked. Wainwright has classified and categorised the Lake District so perfectly and so completely that if you have walked the paths he describes, you can almost see the views in your mind as you read the books. They are all lovingly and painstakingly ... Read More:

Some people really do not like this book. Some have given it one star in a review, and others have complained that it does not stand up next to Proulx's much more famous "The Shipping News", yet I feel moved to come to its defence. This is Proulx's first novel, and, for those who do now know the storyline, it begins with the collapse of a family unit on a small farm and goes on to chart the progress (in inverted commas) of the members of that family across the geography and time of the United States in the 20th century.

The fiercest accusation levelled at this book is that it lacks a plot, and I would be inclined to agree, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. Indeed, I often find that otherwise good books are spoiled by their plots, ... Read More:

If you're ordained in the C of E, you already own this book. If you're about to get ordained into the C of E, you're about to own this book.
What's in it?
Well, the bits you will use the most are the Marriage service and the Funeral service.
The versions are given in full here including the alternatives: traditional language vs modern language (e.g. key difference in preface to marriage: "sexual union" vs "bodily union" in traditional language, and all that kind of thing)

They also print out likely scripture passages for funerals and weddings, which is useful.

As for the rest of the book, well, what you might not expect are quite a lot on healing services. This is useful, and practical and there's an interesting ... Read More:

Yes, it's in glorious colour for the first time, and while it takes a little getting used to, it is a great improvement. Unfortunately, in bringing us this "luxury", Spinks have taken their eye off the ball and fallen down with the basics. The book clearly has not been given a final proof-read, and now contains far too may errors. Pictures are not always of the coins they are supposed to be, and some values have clearly been transposed. It smacks of a rushed job. This is still the English coin collector's bible, but for me it's credibility has been compromised, and while the new colour pictures are pretty, I will still be referring back to my copy of last year's edition to check things. If you are buying for the first time, you may wish to to consider buying ... Read More:

Don McCullin's latest collection of photos is a dark mirror. The prints are beautifully rendered-- uniformly dark but perfectly toned in their range of light and shadow. The subject matter is dark too -- there is little to indicate any social progress to lessen the gap between the privileged and the have-nots over the nearly fifty years the collection represents at its maximum span. McCullin's pictures show bleakly how little has changed over that period.

But perhaps what is most striking is how the English at play still look grotesque regardless of class. You expect shots of your parents generation to look odd; it is startling to see your own generation repeat the same inanities of dress and expression. Take away the captions and you'd be hard pressed ... Read More:

I had to read this for GCSE in 1994 and it was a struggle from start to finish. It truly was 'hard times' reading this book, but something in it did appeal to me, because it didn't turn me off of Dickens. I have read further novels by him since - and not always because I have been forced to! There was a good TV series made of this book (the teacher made us watch it), with Bob Peck in it - that white hunter-type character from the first Jurassic Park film, who has since died, apparently.

I thoroughly enjoyed Weir's book on Isabella. Other reviewers have pointed out that it is extremely detailed and you do have to wade through a fair amount of background information. However, I feel all this extra information puts Isabella's life in context. There is no point reading a biography of someone if you do not have an idea what life was like during his/her lifetime.
Weir outlines her theory that Edward II was not in fact murdered, but escaped to live as a hermit in Italy. While on the one hand this does sound fairly preposterous, Weir gives evidence that it may have happened. I think one of the points this book makes so strongly, is that the story of Edward's death was probably fictitious. It is commonly held that he died from having a hot poker inserted up ...
