Years ago I checked this book out of the library. I bought a copy the day the book was returned to the library. I have used it so much for my research that it is now held together with tape and glue. (I am a published author of short fantasy stories that have as their framework some of the information on village life from this book.) Thanks are due to these fine people for opening up the past to our modern eyes.

A newspaper and magazine journalist for over 25 years, Stephen Booth was born in the English Pennine mill town of Burnley. He was brought up on the coast at Blackpool. Stephen gave up journalism in 2001 to write crime novels full time.

Withens is a small village in the Peak District and like many other small town and villages it is troubled by theft and vandalism, but Withens problems stem from mainly one local family, the Oxleys, a family from hell. Now the village is the focus of a murder investigation. A young man's body has been discovered out on the cold and desolate moors nearby and the man is a member of the family from hell, he is an Oxley.

Police are also trying to solve the mystery of a young girl who ... Read More:

Certainly a candidate for it. Hill's monumental work is probably the definitive work of the British Marxist Historians group of scholars who appeared in the immediate after of World War II. It featured such lumanaries as E.P. Thompson and Rodney Hilton and basically invented Social History through its study of what became known as 'History from Below'.
Thompson's 'The Making of the English Working Class' is the most famous publication of the group, but 'World turned Upside Down' is, in the humble opinion of this author, the best.

It expands on Hill's thesis about the two revolutions that took place in England at the time of the Civil War. Focussing on the second, democratic, revolution, that ultimately failed; Hill examines some of the main ... Read More:

I really enjoyed this book. It is edgy and incredibly sexy and hard to put down. Even when I couldn't quite agree with the heroine's choices, I couldn't stop reading until the last page. I loved the ending too which fitted perfectly with the overall mystery and driving pace of this fascinating story.

What's in it?
Well, the bits you will use the most are the Marriage service and the Funeral service.
The versions are given in full here including the alternatives: traditional language vs modern language (e.g. key difference in preface to marriage: "sexual union" vs "bodily union" in traditional language, and all that kind of thing)

They also print out likely scripture passages for funerals and weddings, which is useful.

As for the rest of the book, well, what you might not expect are quite a lot on healing services. This is useful, and practical and there's an interesting little theological introduction. ... Read More:

A very funny, and fascinating story of three men crossing England in an electric milk float. I loved the radio 4 programme about their trip but having read the book it seems that barely scratched the surface of their month-long journey. A top read.

This is a wonderful work of historical fiction in which the author weaves gossamer threads of fact and fiction around Anne Boleyn, one of the most intriguing and enigmatic women who ever lived. She was a woman who would change the face of England by holding out for a crown that she would wear for a scant three years. Her will to be crowned a Queen would pave the way for the Reformation to take root in England.

About a third of the book is devoted to establishing Anne's relationship to her family, friends, and early admirers. It details her first love affair, that with Henry Percy, the heir to the Earl of Northumberland, said to have been the love of her life, until Cardinal Wolsey, at the behest of King Henry VIII, nipped it in the bud, causing him to incur Anne's lifelong enmity. ...
