I am a fan of 'Horrible Histories'but this book was very disapointing and i found myself rushing through it just to finish. It doesnt say anything on the pagan beliefs of the English and it doesnt say much about the early Anglo-Saxons invaders (the english). It doesnt say much on the Vikings, Normans, the reformation by Henry 8th, the battles with the Scots, Irish, Welsh or French or even the two world wars. It seems the author has saved all the best bits to make other books (which are very good) and has just filled this book with boring jokes and dull questions, I would recommend it for kids but adults may find it a little boring and unformative. For a real book on England i highly recommend "A Brief History of the Anglo-Saxons".

This book was written in the style of John McPhee and even quoting him once in a while. It includes facts and people like "The Perfect Storm." Then Bill Bryson adds first hand personal experiences. You can identify with his comments that do not have to be funny to be familiar.

This book recounts Bill Bryson's experiences on the Appalachian Trail. The dry facts can be picked up through other material. However the personal experiences are just that, personal. If you have never been hiking then you still get a feel for what you have missed. However if you have hiked then you can really appreciate the people he met, and circumstances that he went through. There are hikers and then there are hikers. In the Boy Scouts you are usually in ... Read More:

Henry Mayhew, founder of Punch magazine, wrote this four-volume sociological classic during the 1850's. If you are at all interested in the Victorian era, in British history, in London, or in urban history in general, this is a must-read. This version is abridged and is a distillation of the "best" of the multiple-volume set. This distillation is itself over 500 pages, so imagine the impact of the entire set! The utter destitution of the London poor is set out in such vivid detail than one cannot help being shocked at the conditions human beings were forced to live in in the greatest city of its time. The only fault I find with this book is Mayhew's occasional lapses into preaching. Otherwise a fine book.

What an interesting read. Initially I didn't want to read much beyond the beginning when I knew that something awful was going to happen. But I did and it does. And then it's just a downward slide to an almost inevitable end.
But the book is compelling; Helen Walsh writes with real insight into lives and I suspect not all of this is fiction. The book made me cry at the end; but I could never say I am sorry I read it. I think it's a wonderful book, well written and incredibly real.
Wish I could find an e-mail address for her to tell her how much I liked her writing.

All too often (and even in these columns) this book is praised for its peerless description of the Village Cricket Match and the rest is dismissed. Most unfair. The whole book deserves to be right up there with Diary of a Nobody, Three Men on a Boat and Jerome's even better Three Men on the Bummel as one of the classics of (very) British humour.

First, the range of characters is ambitiously broad, engagingly funny, as immaculately drawn as Evelyn Waugh's and a lot more believable than any in P.G.Wodehouse. Here are louche writers, dizzy starlets, pragmatic editors, chinless wonders, ambitious diplomats, double-barrelled Old-Etonian civil servants, conniving politicians, intimidating blacksmiths, garrulous and much-travelled engineers and lots ... This is an offset facsimile of the first printing published in 1899 in London by Leonard Smithers. According to his biographer, Richard Ellmann, Oscar Wilde worked on the design of this text himself.

The Orchises facsimile is printed on Ph balanced paper and is bound in full cloth in sewn signatures; although slightly reduced from the original in size, in most crucial respects it duplicates the original edition.
