Many books can be found outlining Georgian political history and more than one biography has been written on Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, but the everyday lives of genteel women have had less attention. In this book, Vickery uses surviving letters, diaries, accounts and pocketbooks of a selection of Georgian women living genteel lives in Northern England. I found the book interesting, but fairly heavy going in places. Any modern woman reading the chapter on childbirth will be glad to live in the current age! This is a good insight into everyday life and the role and functions of women within society. However, the type in my copy I found to be quite small, and so a little hard on the eyes. Chapters are also quite long with few breaks ... Read More:

A very funny, and fascinating story of three men crossing England in an electric milk float. I loved the radio 4 programme about their trip but having read the book it seems that barely scratched the surface of their month-long journey. A top read.

Apart from having her love for Seymour set aside so the King could marry her and managing to never put herself, Edward or those around them at risk of his jealousy; Parr was a stepmother to Mary, Elizabeth and Edward who tried to create a united family, she was a religious reformer who asserted herself too strongly and Henry arranged her arrest only to be persuaded otherwise at the last minute. If she hadn't been able to win Henry back round with some swift grovelling she could have lost her life. She probably would have been a great regent for Edward VI's minority. She's a exciting and vibrant figure.

This book lost a sense of Catherine the woman though by throwing a dozen dates and a family tree in every sentence. I appreciate the ... Read More:

Jo is transformed into a famous novelist who spends her time trying to hide from her public with little luck. It's quite humorous. Plumfield is now a college. Nat goes abroad for advanced training in music and learns other lessons better. Dan seeks to build a new world in the West and runs into the consequences of his quick temper. Emil has a most remarkable adventure on the high seas that will remind many of classic sailing tales in the 19th century. Nan is interested in medicine and little else. Demi turns out to be spoiled. ... Read More:
